Test Drive: Audi S8

AudiThe Audi S8 is a further refined version of the Audi brand's flagship sedan, the Audi A8. It boasts enhanced driving performance and a smoother, more comfortable ride, solidifying its position as the pinnacle of Audi's sedan lineup.Test Drive: S6, S6 Avant, S7 SportbackFollowing these, Fumio Ogawa tested the S8, the highest model in the S series. What were his impressions?

If You're Buying an '8', Get the 'S'

Audi S8isAudi A8refined for a sportier feel. Its 4.0-liter V8 engine, equipped with twin intercooled turbochargers, produces a maximum output of 520 ps and a peak torque of 650 Nm. For comparison, the Audi A8 4.2 TFSI quattro offers 372 ps and 555 Nm, highlighting a significant difference in performance figures alone.

While the Audi A8 4.2 FSI quattro is priced at 11.71 million yen, the Audi S8 commands a price of 15.8 million yen. To get straight to the conclusion of this test drive: for those who can afford the A8, I believe the S8 is worth the price difference due to its exceptional level of refinement.

Visually, S models are distinguished by specific parts such as the front grille, bumpers, alloy wheels, and rear spoiler. Beyond these and the badges, there are no other prominent features. This understated approach may be a testament to Audi's aesthetic philosophy.

The 'S' in 'S8' signifies Audi's designation for its sporty models. While Mercedes has 'AMG' and BMW has 'M', Audi's equivalent performance models are the 'RS' (not available in Japan). The 'S models', like the S8, occupy a unique market position with no direct rivals.

Understated Presence

The body dimensions are a lengthy 5,145mm in length with a 2,995mm wheelbase, and a width of 1,950mm and height of 1,455mm. These are nearly identical to the A8 4.2 FSI quattro, though the S8 is 10mm lower. This is combined with the 'quattro' permanent all-wheel-drive system.

The S8 features numerous unique mechanical characteristics. One is its powerful powertrain with twin turbochargers. However, it's not just about raw power. It also incorporates a 'cylinder-on-demand system' that deactivates four of the eight cylinders, a 'start-stop system' that shuts off the engine at idle, and an 'energy recovery system'.

It also inherits the 'ASF (Audi Space Frame)' lightweight all-aluminum body, a hallmark of the A8, aiming for high levels of both efficiency and handling.AudiExclusive to the S model are features such as the specially tuned 'adaptive air suspension', comfort sport seats designed for both support and comfort, and 'active noise cancellation' that uses out-of-phase sound waves to neutralize noise. The 21-inch alloy wheels add a dynamic visual presence, yet the overall impression remains restrained. This subtle presence is a common characteristic of Audi S models.

The S8's suspension system utilizes air dampers, balancing sporty driving with ride comfort. The ride quality is exceptionally good – not stiff, nor overly soft, but smooth and refined, likely aligning with the preferences of its target audience.

(Editor's Note: After this article was written, a minor facelift of the Audi A8 was introduced in Japan. The Audi A8 4.2 FSI quattro was replaced by the Audi A8 4.0 TSFI quattro, incorporating some of the S8's technical features into the A8.)Audi A8 Minor Change

Feels Like the Size of an A4

Driving the S8, I found it surprisingly sporty. The 4.2-liter V8 engine is known for its strong torque from low RPMs, and the S8's 4.0-liter V8 also leverages its large displacement to deliver ample torque from just a few hundred RPM. Above 2,000 RPM, where the turbochargers kick in, the power becomes even more pronounced.

The steering feel has a unique weightiness when turning, reminiscent of Mercedes. Not all S models share this precise steering feel, which makes one wonder about the rationale behind such brand-specific tuning. However, I don't dislike it; the moderate resistance when turning is quite appealing. It feels stable around the center and inspires confidence.

The feedback from the road is not particularly aggressive, which I personally find a bit disappointing. Despite this, the car responds sharply to even slight accelerator inputs, and its reaction speed to steering inputs is swift.

Even with its over 5-meter length, the S8A4feels like it's the size of an A4. This is a crucial point: cars that feel too large often have steering speeds or acceleration that don't match the driver's senses, making them less enjoyable. The S8 is exceptionally well-executed and a pleasure to drive.

Utterly Smooth

The 'cylinder-on-demand system' activates when conditions are met: speed exceeding 25 km/h, engine speed between 960 and 3,500 rpm, transmission in third gear or higher, and coolant temperature above 30°C and oil temperature above 50°C. During operation, fuel supply to four of the eight cylinders is cut off, improving fuel efficiency.

A message indicating four-cylinder operation appears between the speedometer and tachometer, but it's difficult to perceive the cylinder deactivation. The transition is that smooth. This system reportedly improves fuel economy by 5% in city driving and 10% on the highway.

The pursuit of smoothness appears to be paramount, as expected from a top-tier model. One sophisticated mechanism employed is the use of electromagnetic coils in the engine mounts to absorb vibrations, particularly those generated during four-cylinder operation, preventing them from reaching the occupants.

The S8's suspension is also noteworthy. The air suspension system balances sporty driving with ride comfort. In practice, the ride quality is excellent – neither too firm nor too soft, but smooth and refined, perfectly suiting the car's intended audience.

It's surprisingly enjoyable on winding roads as well. The handling is quick, and the car follows steering inputs precisely. It's a car designed for the driver's enjoyment.

The moderately sporty S8 effectively embodies its potential as a driver-focused car. In this regard, it fits seamlessly within the A8 lineup.

While the A models prioritize comfort and effortless long-distance travel, sometimes catering to rear-seat passengers, the S8 emphasizes driving pleasure. Yet, it doesn't lean too far into sportiness; instead, it expands upon the A8's diverse characteristics in all directions, resulting in a more complete package.

For instance,Mercedes-Benzcurrently only offers the 'AMG' variant for the long-wheelbase version of the 'S-Class'. For those who don't require a long-wheelbase car, the S8 holds significant value. Furthermore, its closest competitor in terms of price, at 15.8 million yen, is theE63 AMG(14.95 million yen), which features a 5.5-liter V8 engine producing 540 ps. In terms of luxury and a certain sense of exclusivity, the S8 holds a superior position. It is a model with a rare and compelling presence.
