Audi S Models: A Quartet Assembled

AudiAudi Japan has simultaneously launched its high-performance "S models" in Japan. Four models are now available: the "S6," "S6 Avant," "S7 Sportback," and "S8." While it's true that they cater to different market segments, the S6 and S7 are relatively close in positioning.

The S6, its station wagon variant the S6 Avant, and the S7 Sportback all share the same engine: a 3,992cc V8 with two intercooled turbochargers.

They also share the 7-speed dual-clutch "S tronic" transmission and the "quattro" permanent all-wheel-drive system.

Exploring the Rivals

Comparing the S6 and S7 Sportback to their base models, the A6 and A7 Sportback, we see that while the A6 3.0 TFSI (¥8.35 million) and A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI (¥8.79 million) both produce 310ps and 440Nm from a 3.0-liter V6 turbo, the S6 and S7 Sportback are equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 turbo engine delivering 420ps and 550Nm. The prices are ¥11.8 million for the S6, ¥12.1 million for the S6 Avant, and ¥12.24 million for the S7 Sportback.

When we compare these three S models to their rivals, their positioning becomes quite interesting.Mercedes-Benz's "S350" (¥10.85 million),BMW's740i" (¥10.1 million) are close in price.

The rivals for the A6 and A7 Sportback are the Mercedes-Benz "E350" (¥8.75 million) and the BMW "535i" (¥8.4 million), but there's a significant price difference between these and the S models.

The higher price of the S models is justified by their special interiors and exteriors, and their outstanding performance. It might be better to consider them as more specialized models within Audi's lineup rather than directly comparing them.

So, which of the S6, S6 Avant, and S7 Sportback is the best? For those seeking a reasonably sized personal car, these three models present a delightful dilemma.

Audi S6

The A7's fastback body style has been quite popular recently, which is understandable given its personal ambiance, distinct from the E-Class, which is three years past its launch, and the 5 Series, which, despite its high level of refinement, can feel a bit understated. Adding the S model with its enhanced performance to this lineup makes for a compelling offering.

A Luxury Car Befitting the Modern Era

All three models feature a 4-liter displacement, aiming for high efficiency through forced induction, which is very contemporary. Furthermore, the combination of high power with mechanisms to maximize fuel economy, such as the "Cylinder on Demand system" that operates on four cylinders under certain conditions, and the "energy regeneration system," seems appropriate for luxury cars of this era.

The attention to detail is also impeccable. From the adjustment of gaps between panel joints to the color matching of synthetic resin parts, and the meticulous surface treatment and appropriate use of metal and wood, a sense of luxury is masterfully conveyed.

The adoption of specially designed high-back seats, known as S sport seats, also clearly defines the character of the S models. The seat base and backrest feature a pleasing cross-stitch design reminiscent of sports cars from a bygone era, effectively creating a certain aesthetic.

Let's Drive

How do the S6, S6 Avant, and S7 Sportback perform when driven? In a word: powerful, with excellent suspension, and luxurious.

The engine offers abundant torque, and the handling is refined. The chassis, which extensively uses lightweight materials like "Audi ultra," also provides ample comfort. This is the fundamental shared appeal. Furthermore, the "Audi ultra" system plays a significant role.AudiThis system allows you to select engine response, shift programs, and steering characteristics via buttons inside the cabin. It's likely already familiar to Audi owners.

The benefits of this system are particularly noticeable in the S models.

Selecting "Comfort" mode allows you to experience a smooth ride, as if gliding, powered by the engine's ample torque. The steering also has more assistance, making it light to turn.

Shifting to "Dynamic" mode transforms the car's character so dramatically that you'll exclaim, "The S models are truly remarkable cars!" The engine responds sensitively to even the slightest movement of the accelerator pedal, delivering abundant torque and providing exhilarating acceleration.

The steering feel becomes heavier (interestingly, it has a feel that somewhat evokes Mercedes), and the steering input from the initial micro-movements is precise, offering unwavering stability even when driving straight at high speeds. The car moves exactly as you intend.

The powertrain delivers power from very low RPMs (though there's a slight dip in torque around 2,000 rpm), and above 3,000 rpm, you experience astonishing acceleration. Using the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and driving in the higher RPM range offers a level of enjoyment comparable to a sports car.

Thanks to the adaptive air suspension, the car smoothly absorbs road imperfections at low speeds, while at high speeds, it achieves a superb ride quality, as if glued to the road.

Which is the Best Buy!?

With three models that have slightly different characters now available, if I had to choose a personal favorite, it would be the S6. This is because the S6, lacking a hatch gate, has fewer openings and thus the highest cabin quietness, fulfilling the requirements of a luxurious sports sedan – quiet, comfortable, and enjoyable – to a very high degree.

While both the S6 Avant and S7 Sportback have their own unique merits that make them hard to choose between, at higher speeds, the intrusion of wind noise from around the long roof or hatch gate becomes noticeable.

However, this is from the perspective of rear-seat passengers. If you intend to use the S7 Sportback as a "2+2" configuration, it could also be a good choice.

Mercedes-Benzhas "AMG," and BMW has "M" – rivals also have superb specialty lines. However, in terms of price, for example, the Mercedes-Benz "E63 AMG" is ¥14.95 million, and the BMW "M5" is also ¥14.95 million, which is considerably higher than the Audi S6's ¥11.8 million.Audialso has the RS line, which directly competes with AMG and M in terms of performance, but the "RS6" is expected to arrive later. More importantly, the S models, positioned between the A and RS lines, offer an excellent balance of comfort and sportiness at a high cost-performance ratio. The S models are cars for discerning adults.
