Third-Generation M-Class Arrives in Japan

The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz "M-Class," which has sold over 1.2 million units worldwide since its debut in 1997, has begun sales in Japan following its full model change last June.

This new M-Class features the "Direct Control suspension," which automatically adjusts shock absorber damping force by controlling oil flow based on driving conditions. It also includes electric power steering that varies steering effort with speed and adjusts steering ratio with the steering angle, as well as the "4MATIC" all-wheel-drive system, Mercedes-Benz's proprietary technology that has evolved over four generations since its first introduction on the E-Class in 1987.

Three engine options are available. The 3.5-liter V6 direct-injection gasoline engine in the "ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY" produces 225 kW (306 hp) and 370 Nm, an increase of 25 kW (34 hp) and 20 Nm over the previous model. The 3-liter V6 direct-injection diesel turbo engine in the "ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC" delivers 190 kW (258 hp) and 620 Nm, an increase of 35 kW (47 hp) and 80 Nm over the previous model. Notably, while the previous diesel model was only available in left-hand drive, this new model marks the first time a right-hand drive option is offered. The AMG-developed V8 direct-injection twin-turbo engine in the top-tier "ML 63 AMG" has been significantly downsized from the previous 6.2-liter engine to 5.5 liters, yet it boasts an increase of 11 kW (15 hp) and 70 Nm, achieving 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Nm.

The "ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY," equipped with the 7-speed automatic transmission "7G-TRONIC PLUS," is priced at 7.5 million yen, and the "ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC" at 7.9 million yen, both slightly lower than their predecessors. In contrast, the "ML 63 AMG," featuring "AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS," remains at 14.9 million yen, with its price unchanged.

Limited Edition of 90 Units Also Introduced

In addition to the grades introduced above, a special edition "ML 350 4MATIC Edition 1," limited to 90 units in Japan, was also released on the same day.

This model is based on the "ML350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY" and features a diamond white body color, with the front spoiler, side skirts, and rear skirt replaced with components from the "AMG Styling Package." The wheels are exclusive 20-inch AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels.

The interior comes standard with the "designo Exclusive Leather Interior" package, which includes leather seats and door trims with diamond stitching. It also features exclusive interior trim panels and steering wheel made from beautiful brown ash wood. This model is priced at 9 million yen.
