We took the flagship saloon 'Mulsanne' and the coupe 'Continental GT' for a test drive. Kumiko Shimizu, a popular blogger familiar to OPENERS readers and an amateur racer, also test drove these two latest Bentleys. This time, we present the experience in an interview format.

A Car That Immerses You in Richness and Elegance You Can't Normally Experience

──First, could you share your initial impressions of the Mulsanne saloon and the Continental GT coupe?

Regarding the Mulsanne, I knew it was the flagship model of a brand representing exclusive cars, a luxury saloon where every detail is meticulously crafted. But I didn't know much beyond the general concept. Its role seemed more like a chauffeur-driven car than a driver's car. The Continental GT has a charming, rounded design that I think women would like. I believe it's Paris Hilton's car, isn't it?

──Did you have an admiration for the brand itself?

As someone who races and loves fast sports cars, I always thought Bentley was out of my league. However, since I started driving a Mercedes S-Class this year, I've begun to appreciate full-size premium cars as well.

Actually, I was torn between the Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the S-Class when I was buying. I believe the allure of a car lies in its ability to provide power and a special feeling that transcends the human body. I felt these two brands share a commonality in offering a richness and elegance that one cannot experience in daily life.

I usually drive a Nissan GT-R as my daily car, so I was looking for something completely different.

Overwhelming Acceleration Like a Bullfight

──So, what were your impressions when you actually saw the Mulsanne?

The moment I saw it, I was overwhelmed by its size, presence, and a unique aura that's hard to put into words. I immediately fell in love with its classic form, which conveyed tradition at first glance.

I also love its commanding front end. The glossy black finish gives it a dignified and masculine appearance. I used to drive a small red car, but it seemed like we weren't a good match...

──What was your impression when you drove it?

Perhaps because of its imposing presence, I was a little intimidated before getting in. But once I was behind the wheel, I only felt it was a bit large; it was actually easy to drive. I felt enchanted by the magic hidden in the Mulsanne's driver's seat and steering wheel, and I could have easily become conceited. The turning radius was surprisingly good, and parking wasn't as difficult as I had imagined.

──How does it compare to the S-Class?

It felt sportier. The way the power is delivered is particularly interesting. Unlike the Continental GT, it doesn't respond immediately when you press the accelerator. There's a slight delay, and then an overwhelming surge of power is released. It's like a bull preparing to charge, aiming for the matador's red cape (laughs). That driving feel was unique and fascinating.

──But, on the other hand, doesn't it possess the refinement of Britain's finest driver's car brand?

Even though it's like a bull, it doesn't thrash around wildly; its movements are gentle. The engine sound is quiet, and the tone was pleasant. If the exhaust note were louder, it might be a bit too boisterous...

Speaking of refinement, the wood grain of the interior trim, the leather of the seats, and the stitching are also beautiful, aren't they?

A Masterpiece Saloon Crafted by Artisans

──It is said that the Mulsanne's trim uses a composite material made from 24 pieces of wood, each carved from walnut and painstakingly applied by craftsmen. It reportedly takes nine weeks to finish the interior of one car.

Regarding the engine, it has been continuously improved for about 50 years since the Bentley S2's V8 engine was developed in 1959. For Bentley, the refined V8 engine is a true icon.

It has such a long history!? It's like a winery!

──The model name also has an origin. In 1923, the 'Circuit de la Sarthe' at Le Mans was established, consisting of public roads in the Sarthe department of France and a purpose-built race circuit. Beyond the longest straight of 6 kilometers on this circuit lay a village called 'Mulsanne.' Bentley was originally a dominant force at Le Mans. They have an absolute commitment to performance, and the name was chosen to appeal to that glorious history even today.

Perhaps because of its history, driving the Mulsanne inexplicably instills a sense of confidence, as if I can't be beaten by anyone. So, to control that feeling, I might have deliberately driven with more refinement. Yet, even while driving leisurely, in my heart, I might have been looking down on other cars (laughs). One would need a strong spirit, unswayed by such emotions, to handle this car...

──If you were to own this car, how would you use it?

I'd love to use it for my daily commute, but I don't think it's limited to specific settings. It seemed to blend naturally into any environment, whether in the city, on mountain roads like Hakone, or in the countryside. It was a car that gave me a positive shock, making me think, 'I absolutely want this!' (laughs).

A Coupe Pursuing Elegance Over Efficiency

──Now, let's talk about the Continental GT. You mentioned Paris Hilton earlier...

I like her. I admire people, regardless of gender, who have a constant smile, an air of余裕 (yoyu - composure/余裕), and a strong mental fortitude that remains unshaken by anything.

I think she's the kind of person who could get away with customizing the Continental GT's interior and exterior in vibrant pink or adorning the emblem with Swarovski crystals... things that might be considered taboo for others.

──Were you interested in the Continental GT?

I am interested, but originally,Bentleyhad the image of a saloon, so I wondered why it was a coupe when it has almost the same body size as the Flying Spur.

──Since the age of horse-drawn carriages, large, elegant coupes have been the most luxurious mode of transport for aristocrats and the privileged class. Owning such a car was a status symbol and a matter of style. The coupe style is a culture cultivated in Europe. Large coupes, which prioritize styling over practicality and have limited seating capacity, pursue elegance over efficiency.

I see, it is indeed luxurious! The elegant rounded styling is also captivating. The Superforming technology, which eliminates panel gaps and welds, is truly remarkable... The interior's contrasting cream and black two-tone combination is exceptionally stylish. Even with a wide range of color options in Japanese cars, they tend to stick to similar shades, so I wish they would learn from this novelty.

──What was your impression when you test drove it?

Unlike the Mulsanne, it didn't have a distinct power band; it accelerated smoothly from low RPMs, which was fascinating. Every movement was so seamless that it was consistently comfortable, whether driving or riding as a passenger. The powerful sound of the 12-cylinder engine when started was invigorating, but overall, it offered a well-balanced ride with no harshness. Despite weighing well over two tons, it handled the winding roads of Hakone with remarkable agility, making its weight unnoticeable.

──You mentioned you really want the Mulsanne, but what about this one?

Of course, I want it too (laughs). It's a great car overall, and I think it's practical for daily use. Its more charming design than the Mulsanne makes it photogenic, and I dream of going on dates or shopping in it.

──As a passenger?

Definitely in the driver's seat! (laughs).
