Report from Geneva: Panamera S Hybrid Premieres!

The Geneva Motor Show, one of the world's five major auto shows, is always a vibrant event. This year, a truly impressive lineup of vehicles from car brands around the globe was unveiled. Porsche, naturally, was among them. With the world premiere of its second hybrid model for production, the vehicles on display exuded an incredible energy.

A Press Conference Held at an Unusually Early Hour

This marks the 81st Geneva Motor Show. While Switzerland has no major automotive manufacturers, it serves as the first major European show of the year. Because no single country's manufacturers dominate, all brands invest significant effort, making it a consistently lively show that ranks among the world's top five.

For Porsche, the Geneva Motor Show is undoubtedly an important event. Despite its small size, Switzerland's high income level makes it a crucial market for luxury cars, attracting keen attention to Porsche.

Porsche had prepared several highlights for this year's show. The press conference to unveil them began at the remarkably early hour of 7:30 AM on the first press day. Yet, the booth was packed with numerous members of the press. Given the season, most journalists had departed their accommodations before dawn to gather at the venue.

Porsche's Most Fuel-Efficient Hybrid Premieres

Porsche had previously announced that a 'parallel-series full hybrid model would have its world premiere.' However, the first vehicle to appear on stage was a hybrid, but not the one anticipated. The Porsche 'Semper Vivus,' the world's first hybrid car unveiled by Porsche's founder, Ferdinand Porsche, at the 1900 Paris Exposition, made a self-propelled appearance. This innovative vehicle, featuring in-wheel motors on the front wheels and a generator engine, was later produced under the name 'Lohner-Porsche.'

Naturally, the original vehicle from that era is not extant; this is a recent recreation by Porsche. As the atmosphere warmed up, the vehicle making its world premiere finally appeared:Panamera S hybrid.

The Panamera, since its announcement in April two years ago, officially included a hybrid option. The hybrid powertrain is shared with theCayenne S hybrid, combining a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine producing 333 ps with an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission. Sandwiched between them is an electric motor with 47 ps, resulting in a combined output of 380 ps. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds. Furthermore, depending on driving conditions, it can travel up to 2 km at speeds of up to 85 km/h on electric power alone. Features like automatic engine stop-start at idle and a coasting function that shuts off the engine at speeds up to 165 km/h (exceeding the Cayenne S hybrid's 156 km/h) while cruising contribute to a fuel consumption of 7.1 L/100 km (approximately 14.1 km/L) and CO2 emissions of 167 g/km. With the optional, specially developed low rolling resistance all-season tires, these figures can be further improved to 6.8 L/100 km (approximately 14.7 km/L) and 159 g/km of CO2 emissions.

The Panamera S hybrid is scheduled to go on sale starting in June, beginning in Germany, with a price announced at 106,185 euros (approximately 11.99 million yen). While the exact timing is unconfirmed, it is expected to arrive in Japan soon.

A key difference from the Cayenne S hybrid is that this model is FR, meaning rear-wheel drive. This contributes to further reductions in vehicle weight and driving resistance, and combined with its inherent aerodynamic advantages, it achieves superior fuel efficiency and environmental performance compared to the Cayenne S hybrid, making it Porsche's most efficient to date.

Hybrid Sports Car Debuts in Europe!

Under the banner of 'Porsche Intelligent Performance,' Porsche is advancing its hybrid strategy. The company also unveiled the918 RSR hybrid racing car conceptin Europe for the first time. This concept car, which debuted at the Detroit Motor Show in January, incorporates technology cultivated from races like the Nürburgring 24 Hours, specifically from the911 GT3 R hybrid. While specific race participation plans are undecided, it is a model that promises exciting future developments.

In addition to these, the recently announced limited edition models, the911 Black Editionand theBoxster S Black Edition, also graced the booth. Both feature a unified black theme for the interior and exterior, along with various added options. The former is based on the911 Carreraand includes 19-inch wheels, aluminum interior trim, and a BOSE sound system, with a global limited production of 1,911 units. The latter features a 10 ps increase in the Boxster S engine output to 320 ps, along with standard equipment such as a comfort package including bi-xenon headlights and a design package with 19-inch wheels. It is limited to 987 units worldwide. Both have already been announced in Japan.

And not to forget theCayman R. This was also its first public showing in Europe. With such a packed agenda, the press conference concluded in the blink of an eye. The press who had gathered at the unusually early start time initially looked a bit sleepy. However, by the end of the presentation, the entire booth, and indeed its surroundings, were filled with the immense energy emanating from Porsche.
