Further Enhanced Driving Pleasure

The BMW 6 Series Cabriolet, which premiered at the recent Detroit Motor Show, will soon be available in Japan. This premium vehicle combines a flowing body and a refined interior with technologies based on BMW's EfficientDynamics philosophy, achieving a balance between driving enjoyment and environmental performance.

The Japanese lineup will feature two models: the "640i" and the "650i." The 640i is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine featuring a twin-scroll turbocharger, a high-precision direct injection system, and Valvetronic. This engine produces a maximum output of 235 kW (320 ps) and a peak torque of 450 Nm (45.9 kgm). While it is the same engine found in the BMW 535i and BMW X5 xDrive35i, its output has been increased by 10 kW (14 ps) and 50 Nm (5.1 kgm) for enhanced efficiency. The 650i, on the other hand, boasts a more powerful 4.4-liter V8 BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 300 kW (407 ps) and a peak torque of 600 Nm (61.2 kgm). Both models come with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

This new 6 Series Cabriolet features Integrated Active Steering, a system also found in the 5 Series, which combines active steering that variably controls the front wheel angle according to vehicle speed with rear-wheel steering functionality. Additionally, features like Dynamic Driving Control, which allows for setup of driving modes suited to the situation, have been extensively incorporated to "further enhance the joy of driving," according to BMW.

The 640i is the first BMW automatic transmission model to feature the "Engine Auto Start/Stop function," achieving the "FY2010 Fuel Economy Standard +25%" and "Heisei 17 Emission Standards 75% Reduction Level." According to European data, CO2 emissions are kept as low as 185 g/km. For comparison, the 650i emits 249 g/km.

Exterior and Interior Design Balancing Style and Practicality

Regarding the design, the exterior features BMW's traditional, slightly angled kidney grille, with elegantly flowing, sporty lines. The headlights are equipped with dual bi-xenon units, and the newly adopted LED light rings, combined with the LED accent lines on the light strips positioned at the top of the headlights, create a sharp and commanding face.

The interior adopts a design where the center console and instrument panel are integrated, forming BMW's traditional asymmetrical form.

A freestanding flat-screen display with a chrome bezel is used for the 10.2-inch high-resolution widescreen Control Display positioned at the top of the instrument panel.

Furthermore, the soft top can be automatically opened or closed at speeds below 40 km/h and folds away very compactly. This ensures a trunk capacity of 300 liters even when the top is down (350 liters when closed), demonstrating excellent practicality.

The new BMW 6 Series Cabriolet is priced at 10.28 million yen for the 640i and 13.30 million yen for the 650i. Reservations opened on February 24th, with deliveries scheduled to begin in April.
