Larger, Lighter, More Efficient

The new A6 is slightly shorter than the current model at 4920mm in length, but its wheelbase has been extended by 65mm to 2910mm. The width and height have also increased to 1870mm and 1460mm, respectively. According to the press release, although not explicitly stated as ASF (Audi Space Frame), the body utilizes aluminum and high-strength steel. By using aluminum for the front fenders, hood, and doors, a lightweight of 1575kg has been achieved with the 2.0 TDI engine installed.

At the 2011 launch, five engine options will be available. The 2.0-liter TDI, likely to be the best-selling model in Europe, produces 130kW (177ps) and 380Nm (38.7kgm). It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 228km/h. In terms of environmental performance, it records excellent figures with fuel consumption of 4.9ℓ/100km (20.4km/ℓ) and CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

The newly installed V6 3.0-liter TDI boasts a maximum output of 150kW (204ps) and a peak torque of 400Nm (40.8kgm), achieving 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 240km/h. Fuel consumption is 5.2ℓ/100km (19.2km/ℓ) with CO2 emissions of 137g/km. A differently tuned high-power version of the 3.0 TDI is also available, producing 180kW (245ps) and 500Nm (51.0kgm), accelerating from 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds, with a top speed limited to 250km/h by German manufacturers' gentleman's agreement. Fuel consumption is 6.0ℓ/100km (16.7km/ℓ) and CO2 emissions are 158g/km, demonstrating a balance of solid power and environmental consideration in all aspects.

As it is currently unclear whether the TDI models will be introduced in Japan, let's turn our attention to the more realistic gasoline models. The naturally aspirated V6 2.8-liter FSI model outputs 150kW (204ps) and 280Nm (28.6kgm), achieving 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 240km/h, with an average fuel consumption of 7.4ℓ/100km (13.5km/ℓ) and CO2 emissions of 172g/km. The V6 3.0-liter TFSI model delivers 220kW (300ps) and 440Nm (44.9kgm), with 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds, a top speed of 250km/h (limited), fuel consumption of 8.2ℓ/100km (12.2km/ℓ), and CO2 emissions of 190g/km. Fuel consumption has decreased by 19 percent overall compared to the previous model.

Transmissions include a 6-speed manual, the continuously variable multitronic, and the new sporty S tronic.

A Face Reminiscent of the A1

The exterior features Audi's new signature face. The LED-equipped headlights and the hexagonal single-frame grille are reminiscent of the latest A1. With a long hood, low roofline, and dynamic fender lines, the design is more athletic, complemented by 16- to 19-inch alloy wheels. Other features include LED taillights and dual exhaust pipes. The trunk lid has a ducktail design, which helps generate significant downforce. The optional S line package, for a sportier look, includes revised bumper styling, sports suspension, a rear diffuser, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interior shares a similar aesthetic with the A7, featuring climate control, MMI, a 6.5-inch monitor, and "micrometallic platinum" trim (aluminum and wood are optional). Additionally, a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 1300W output, internet connectivity, MMI Navigation Plus with an 8-inch monitor, and separate rear seats can be selected.

Safety features include Active Lane Assist, which uses a camera to detect lanes and assist with steering; Parking Assist, which supports parallel parking; Side Assist, which detects approaching vehicles from blind spots; and Night Vision, which detects pedestrians.

The new Audi A6 is scheduled to go on sale in early 2011, with prices starting at €38,500 (approximately 4.25 million yen) in Germany.
