Achieving Even More Racing Performance Through Weight Reduction

Response, Refine, and Racy. "R" embodies Porsche's aspiration for sports cars, pursued with meticulous precision. Many legendary cars have borne the "R" name. And in 2010, this "Cayman R" is newly designated with the "R."

This mid-engine coupe is powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six engine producing a maximum output of 330 ps (243 kW), 10 ps more than the base Cayman S. With a 6-speed manual transmission, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and with the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), it achieves the same in 4.9 seconds. With the optional Sport Chrono package, which further enhances acceleration, it can reach 4.7 seconds for even higher performance.

The primary goals during the design phase of the Cayman R were to further enhance performance, driving dynamics, and agility. The vehicle weight, according to DIN standards, is a mere 1295 kg, which is 55 kg lighter than the Cayman S. As a result, the power-to-weight ratio has been successfully reduced to 3.9 kg/ps for the standard manual transmission model and 4.0 kg/ps for the PDK model.

A Design Symbolizing Porsche's Heritage

This weight reduction is significantly attributed to the adoption of specific components and the elimination of comfort features. The Cayman R, pursuing pure driving pleasure, features a silhouette 20 mm lower than the Cayman S, a distinctive fixed rear spoiler, silver-painted wheels, and a unique exterior that emphasizes sportiness. The black-framed headlights, black door mirrors, and the "PORSCHE" side decals evoke the image of traditional Porsche racing cars.

The side decals were a prominent feature of the 1967 911 R, the first Porsche to bear the letter "R" in its model name. The 911 R was produced in a limited run of only 19 units for use by top privateers and Porsche itself in motorsport. Based on a production coupe equipped with a Carrera 6 engine producing 210 ps, the prototype utilized many plastic components and featured extremely minimalist equipment, resulting in a vehicle weight of just 830 kg.

The Cayman R, a revival of that history, is a model that combines high driving performance with environmental efficiency. The manual transmission model achieves a top speed of 282 km/h and a fuel consumption of 9.7 L/100 km (10.3 km/L). The PDK model has a top speed of 280 km/h and a fuel consumption of 9.3 L/100 km (10.8 km/L).

Both left-hand and right-hand drive versions are available. The manual transmission model is priced at 9.75 million yen, and the 7-speed PDK model is priced at 10.22 million yen.

You can experience the driving performance of the Cayman R in the following video officially distributed by Porsche.
