Mulsanne's True Essence: A Testament to Victory (1)
BentleyThe Mulsanne is Bentley's flagship large four-door saloon. Following its domestic Japanese launch in spring 2010, an opportunity for a test drive was recently provided. Motor journalist Fumio Ogawa shares his impressions of this car, which is equipped with a newly designed 6.75-liter V8 engine featuring cylinder deactivation and is priced at 33.8 million yen.

A V8 Engine with a Unique Character
"A car created with the concept of producing a magnificent, new Bentley that stands at the pinnacle of the British automotive industry," proclaims Bentley Motors Japan, the domestic subsidiary. The Mulsanne boasts a commanding 5575mm body, powered by a turbocharged V8 engine delivering a maximum output of 512ps and a formidable torque of 1020Nm. It is characterized by its pursuit of sporty handling, combined with an elegant finish that beautifully reflects craftsmanship.
The engine's tuning, which generates 1020Nm of torque from just 1750rpm, is characteristic of Bentley's 'silent sports car' philosophy. While other high-performance cars may offer similar power, such immense torque is unparalleled. Simultaneously, a key objective was to imbue the engine with a character that delivers refined performance across all rev ranges. Furthermore, the introduction of a cylinder deactivation system to enhance environmental compatibility is a notable feature. During high-speed cruising, for instance, four cylinders are deactivated.
Flexible Handling Through "Drive Dynamics Control"
With a long wheelbase of 3266mm, the rear cabin offers a comfortable space for passengers. Bentley, whose brand ethos has centered on creating sporty sedans since its founding before the war, aims to build cars that cater to a wide range of driver preferences, from comfort-oriented to sporty, by combining a highly rigid chassis with air suspension.
To encompass both luxury and sportiness within a single vehicle, Bentley employs "Drive Dynamics Control." This system regulates the damper and steering weight in four stages. "Comfort" prioritizes ride quality, "Sport" enhances handling, and "Custom" allows for a personalized combination of suspension and handling settings. The "Bentley" mode automatically optimizes control based on driving conditions. Settings can be changed using a rotary switch located next to the gear selector.

Intricately Designed Complex Outlines
Bentley emphasizes that the styling combines heritage with modern sophistication. The lines from the D-pillar to the trunk, reminiscent of 1930s models, have been meticulously crafted and harmoniously integrated. Simultaneously, the circular quad headlamps, with their inner lamps embedded with small LEDs in a ring, exude a powerful presence. Coupled with the meticulously engineered matrix grille, achieved through advanced computer design, these features define this unparalleled luxury saloon.
The interior is arguably the Mulsanne's crowning glory. It features the latest equipment, including a key system that records personal information such as seat position, steering wheel position, and seatbelt height, as well as the opening and closing of side window blinds and preset radio stations. It also boasts a navigation system with GPS, a 60GB hard disk drive, and a large 8-inch multimedia screen.
A Majestic Interior Asserting Its Presence
The interior, a masterful blend of wood, chrome, and leather, truly showcases the artisan's skill. Every element, from the polished surfaces to the soft textures and even the aroma, has been meticulously crafted to engage the senses. Tactile elements, such as the newly adopted glass switches, are designed to stimulate human senses, reflecting a thoughtful approach to ultimate hospitality. The leather used for the seats, in particular, is treated using traditional tanning methods, similar to those used for classic Bentleys, to achieve a rich texture and a well-worn appearance. It is said that a skilled craftsman spends 15 hours sewing just one leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Consequently, upon entering, one is immediately struck by the assertive ambiance. True to its origins as a "silent sports car," the driving position is sporty, allowing the driver to extend their legs forward. This reflects a British affinity for sports cars, also seen in Jaguar. Perhaps Audi, the parent company, understands this tradition well.

The "Cylinder Deactivation System" for Refined Driving
The cabin's quietness is another hallmark of the Mulsanne. Even when starting the 6.75-liter V8 via the starter button, the engine is surprisingly quiet. This silence is maintained even while driving, thanks to thorough sound insulation. However, from the outside, the engine note is quite powerful. Unless the "Sport" mode is selected on the "Drive Dynamics Control," the steering response is gentle, suggesting comfortable chauffeur-driven operation.
High-speed cruising is exceptionally comfortable, with smooth and supple handling. The exceptional quietness has already been mentioned. I paid close attention to when the four cylinders would deactivate and reactivate, but the transition is so seamless that it is difficult to perceive. This speaks to its refinement. On the other hand, feedback from the road to the steering wheel remains present, and the response to throttle inputs from partial acceleration is swift, allowing for an enjoyable high-speed cruising experience.
Torque That Makes a Heavy Body Feel Agile
The torque is immense, effortlessly propelling the substantial 2585kg weight without any sense of sluggishness. This feeling transforms into astonishment when "Sport" mode is selected. The steering becomes sharper, the suspension firmer, body roll is suppressed, and when the accelerator is pressed, the Mulsanne surges forward like an arrow. The turbocharger seems to kick in just before 2500rpm, and the acceleration from that point is truly breathtaking.
However, due to the car's weight, cornering at high speeds requires careful timing of steering inputs. If the steering is slightly delayed, the heavy body tends to drift outwards. At such moments, electronic control systems intervene to correct the car's trajectory. Elegant and assured handling is, after all, befitting of Bentley's flagship.
I had the opportunity to drive the Mulsanne on winding roads, highways, and city streets. While I cannot comment on narrow alleys, on regular roads, the car's response to steering inputs is immediate, preventing any feeling of being overwhelmed by its size. Modern European luxury cars seem to necessitate a blend of sportiness. Of course, those seeking a sportier Bentley might opt for a coupe like the Continental GT, but the Mulsanne's true essence lies in being a driver's car, even with its over 5.5-meter four-door body. It is a new generation of ultra-luxury saloon that transcends contemporary standards.
