The invigorating green, a sensation that seeps into every cell

For about two years now, I’ve grown fond of the town of Shimoda in Shizuoka Prefecture and find myself visiting frequently. My affection grew so strong that I ended up building a second home there. Near my house is a beach renowned for having some of the clearest water in Japan, ranking among the top five. It seems to be a surfing mecca as well.

When I mention this, most people ask, 'Do you surf?' Unfortunately, I don't have that hobby. I simply bask in the bright, liberating feeling of the white sandy beach. While the presence of the sea was the biggest factor in my decision to settle here, it wasn't the only reason.

I was also drawn to the 'leisurely' atmosphere of Shimoda and its intensely rich, almost majestic natural greenery.

I had visited Shimoda several times in my 20s for photo shoots. Back then, however, I was just exclaiming, 'Wow, the sea!' and the beauty of the greenery didn't register with me. When I returned, the first thing that struck me was the depth of the green, making me wonder, 'Why is it so different from Tokyo?'

It's a verdant hue, as if it grew with abundant vitality, nourished by fresh air and warm sunshine.
Upon closer inspection, each leaf is thick and broad. This is likely why the overall impression is one of majestic greenery.

Looking at such vibrant green not only soothes me but also makes me feel as if my very cells are being refreshed. It seems that what we see can profoundly affect us, even at a cellular level. Ah, I see! In fact, for several years now, I've lost interest in attending parties and events or dancing at clubs (though I do enjoy them when I go occasionally). These used to be my primary methods of refreshment and sources of enjoyment, but after adopting a more morning-oriented lifestyle, those activities suddenly seemed to lose their luster (perhaps I've simply grown tired of them).

I must have started craving substance over superficial stimulation, seeking things that would delight my cells directly. This is likely what shifted my interest towards 'nature.'

I believe that 'when you need something, it will come to you at the right time.' Shimoda's nature feels like it arrived for me at precisely that moment. And what's more, it's nature that is 'full of bright vitality and leisurely and open,' leaving nothing to be desired! I find myself expressing my gratitude to the heavens these days, thinking, 'Thank you, God!'
