Michiko Fujiwara's Series: How Adults Play with Nail Polish (June 2019)

Styling Tips for Those Who Stick to Classic Nail Polish

My go-to nail polish colors are classic shades like a slightly off-white pink beige or red. These shades brighten my hands, even with a bit of a tan, and complement my adult skin tone. I'm generally not one to experiment with nail polish, so I usually just apply it without any nail art. But recently, I've started to venture out a little (!). I've been trying colors I wouldn't have chosen before, and playing with application techniques. The reason for this change is...

Why I, a "Classic Nail Polish" Adherent, Awakened

The other day, I was struck by an acquaintance who usually wears natural nail polish, but had recently applied a vivid, beautiful shade of green. The contrast of that vibrant color against her mature skin made her hands look stunning. Honestly, I used to feel hesitant about adults drawing attention with bold nail colors, thinking it might look like they were "trying too hard" and perhaps not intellectually sophisticated. But seeing her hands adorned in green, I realized it didn't detract from her intelligence; rather, it exuded a sense of adult confidence. "I see," I thought. "By carefully selecting colors, even adults can beautifully play with nail polish."

Choosing and Combining Nail Polish Colors

Having recently awakened to the joy of playing with nail polish, I've also started experimenting with color coordination. I've come up with some basic rules for beginners to avoid mistakes.

Limit coordinated colors to two.
Apply the main color to four fingers and the accent color to just one.
A lighter shade for the main color and a darker or vivid shade for the accent color often creates a good balance.
Choose colors that are somewhat contrasting but complementary (colors that are too similar can diminish each other's impact).

Which Finger Should Carry the Accent Color for a Beautiful, Natural Look?

Where you place the accent color is also important. Through trial and error, I've found that applying a darker shade to the middle or ring finger creates a good balance and makes the fingers appear longer and more elegant. Using it on the index or thumb can look too deliberate, and on the pinky, it might seem like a test application (laughs).

Furthermore, my personal touch is to avoid applying the accent color to the same finger on both hands, as that can feel overly intentional. Instead, I'll put it on the middle finger of one hand and the ring finger of the other, creating a slight imbalance. You might think this is overly meticulous, but isn't that how we approach fashion coordination? We all have our own subtle preferences. Coordinating nail polish is no different. Trying new things always leads to discoveries.

Here are my two favorite recent combinations:

KOSÉ NAIL HOLIC PU161 × Elegance Cruise FLOWER NAIL LACQUER GR01
I use the whitish blue-purple shade (left photo) as the main color on four fingers, and the pearlescent green (right photo) as the accent. The green really pops against the main color, and since it's just on one finger, it's not overwhelming. The pearls shimmer beautifully in the sunlight, making it perfect for summer outfits!

THREE NAIL POLISH S06 × JILL STUART Strawberry Sweet Nails 127
For the main color, I use THREE's nuanced shade that blends purple, gray, and pink (left photo). As an accent, I chose the chocolate mousse-like color that mixes brown, red, and beige (right photo). This combination exudes femininity and would suit not only summer but also autumn fashion!

Summer is a season when even those who are hesitant about nail polish, like myself, can easily try something new. I encourage you to give it a go!
