Following its highly acclaimed revivals of historical El Primero models from the 1960s and 1970s, the ZENITH Manufacture now unveils the DEFY Revival A3642, bringing back to the present day the iconic DEFY model born in 1969.

1969 was a landmark year for ZENITH and the entire watchmaking industry with the launch of the El Primero calibre. It was also the year ZENITH introduced another remarkable creation: the DEFY collection. At a time when quartz watches were rapidly gaining ground, posing a threat to traditional Swiss watchmaking, ZENITH proved the enduring relevance of mechanical movements by crafting timepieces with a sharp, edgy design and robust construction that stood apart from mass-produced electronic watches.

The DEFY A3642 embodies this bold vision. This model, which paved the way for new avenues of design and performance explored by the Manufacture, earned the nickname "coffre-fort" – French for "bank vault" or "safe" – and masterfully expressed audacity and robustness through its octagonal case with a 14-sided bezel, and its lines and facets highlighted by various finishes. Its aesthetic continues to inspire the modern DEFY collection.

The original DEFY, equipped with a steel "ladder" bracelet designed and produced by the renowned Gay Frères company, was a truly ahead-of-its-time sporty stainless steel bracelet watch with a distinctly geometric aesthetic. With 30 ATM water resistance achieved through its screw-down crown, the DEFY A3642 and its modern revival are undoubtedly watches ready for any terrain and situation.

Faithfully reproduced from the 1969 original blueprints, the DEFY Revival A3642 resurrects all the details and unique design elements that made the original so striking, establishing the benchmarks that continue to inspire modern DEFY models. The warm dial, featuring an impressive gradient effect that darkens towards the edge, was entirely new at its launch in 1969. The unusual square appliques for hour markers feature horizontal grooves that convey a sense of perpetual motion. The broad, faceted hands are generously coated with Super-LumiNova® in a tone reminiscent of the tritium found on the original, paired with a paddle-shaped seconds hand – a distinctive feature of many ZENITH watches of that era. The visual differences between the revival and the original lie in the sapphire crystal, the exhibition case back, and the type of luminous material.

Another significant difference lies in how time is measured internally. Instead of the original solid case back adorned with a star connecting four dots – a design element that became one of the brand's logos and was used repeatedly over the years – this piece features a sapphire crystal case back offering a view of the Manufacture's in-house automatic Elite 670 calibre. This movement beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offers a power reserve of 50 hours when fully wound.
