Clous de Paris Motif Expresses Connection to Paris, Where Rieussec Was Active

This is a new model from Montblanc, paying homage to Nicolas Rieussec, the inventor of the "ink chronograph," considered the ancestor of the modern chronograph.
The story dates back to September 1821, at the famous Champ de Mars racetrack in Paris. Nicolas Rieussec, the sixth-generation watchmaker to the King of France, tested a timekeeping device he designed to accurately record the moment each horse crossed the finish line. His invention used a fixed pen nib that dropped a dot of ink onto one of two rotating counters for minutes and seconds every time a horse crossed the finish line. The ability to scientifically record winning horses revolutionized the sport of horse racing.
The invention was later presented at the Paris Academy of Sciences, where its members combined the Greek words "chronos" (time) and "graphein" (to write) to name the device "chronograph." Thus, the term "chronograph" was born from Nicolas Rieussec's invention.
In 2007, Montblanc introduced a model with its first in-house movement, honoring Nicolas Rieussec and applying his technology. Now, the brand launches two new timepieces with a fresh, unexpected interpretation of this timepiece: a stainless steel model and a limited edition DLC stainless steel model of 500 pieces.
The ergonomically designed 43mm pebble-shaped case houses the in-house "Monopusher Chronograph Movement MB R200." The dial features a chronograph display with two horizontally aligned rotating discs showing elapsed seconds and minutes, with a single index marker connecting the two counters to indicate elapsed time.
The case back is fitted with black translucent sapphire crystal, engraved on the flange with "ACADEMIE DES SCIENCES DE PARIS," recalling the Paris Academy of Sciences' certification of Rieussec's invention in 1821. Additionally, "CHRONOGRAPHE NICOLAS RIEUSSEC" is engraved at the 12 o'clock position.
Both models feature blue accents reminiscent of ink colors. The graphical "Clous de Paris" motif, inspired by the geometric patterns of Parisian cobblestones, is applied not only to the dial but also extends to the woven strap and rotor, evoking a connection to Paris, where Rieussec was active.
