The Fusion of Tudor's Chronograph and Dive Watch Heritage
Tudor's chronographs celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2020. Following half a century of history, the new Black Bay Chrono has been announced. While retaining the stainless steel case and the two-counter sub-dial layout, this new model embodies Tudor's history with its striking color contrasts.
Tudor released its first chronograph in 1970 and has maintained a close connection with motorsports ever since. Similarly, Tudor has been manufacturing dive watches since 1954. The Black Bay Chrono is a model that merges these dual traditions of land and sea.
The distinctive domed dial and recessed counters, along with the contrast between matte black and opaline, enhance legibility. Adhering to Tudor's chronograph tradition, the design features a 45-minute counter and a date display at 6 o'clock, complemented by the iconic Tudor 'Snowflake' hands introduced in 1969, resulting in a watch that encapsulates the history of the Black Bay line.
The 41mm steel case has been updated with clever cuts beneath the sapphire crystal, and the movement has been repositioned. The steel pushers are inspired by early Tudor chronographs, while the steel bezel with a black anodized insert and tachymeter scale lends a sporty aesthetic to this refined chronograph.
The strap options include Tudor's signature fabric, woven on 19th-century looms by Julien Faure, as well as a stainless steel bracelet. The latter is inspired by the riveted bracelets with folding clasps that Tudor produced in the 1950s and 60s. An aged leather strap with ecru topstitching, referencing the brand's connection to motorsports since the 1970s, is also available.
The Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813 powering this model features hours, minutes, seconds, a chronograph function, and a date display. With a power reserve of approximately 70 hours and a silicon balance spring for enhanced anti-magnetic properties, this calibre is COSC-certified, exceeding the standards set by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute for high precision.
This timepiece embodies Tudor's dive watch history and its connection to motorsports. It represents a contemporary, practical watch that combines its neo-vintage concept with modern manufacturing techniques, reliability, robustness, and precision.
