The roots of SEIKO 5 SPORTS trace back to the "SEIKO SPORTSMATIC 5" (commonly known as "SEIKO FIVE"), released in 1963. At the time, the SEIKO FIVE, introduced as Japan's first automatic day-date model, featured five advanced functions as its name suggested. Its specifications, distinct from the dress watches with leather straps that were mainstream then, were novel and matched active scenes, earning it global popularity. Those "advanced functions" were: automatic winding, water resistance, day-date display at the 3 o'clock position, a crown at the 4 o'clock position, and a durable case and band.

Five years later, in 1968, SEIKO 5 SPORTS was born in response to the accelerating sports boom. This model evolved in terms of specifications, offering greater water resistance than its predecessor, the SEIKO FIVE, enhanced visibility in the dark with luminous paint, and the adoption of reinforced glass.
