A High-Performance Chronograph Watch Faithfully Recreating a Historical Model
In 2021, ZENITH released the "Chronomaster Revival A385," a recreation of the first El Primero watch with a gradient dial, first introduced in 1969. The A385, arguably the most significant model in the history of El Primero, is one of three original stainless steel models that pioneered the world's first automatic high-frequency chronograph.
Going beyond the category of vintage-inspired watches, this piece faithfully recreates the historical model by adopting the production plan of the original 1969 model. The 37mm stainless steel case, complete with pump-style pushers, replicates the original tonneau proportions and finishing.
The A385 garnered significant attention in 1970 during a flight experiment designed to demonstrate the superiority of mechanical movements over early quartz movements. The A385 was strapped to the landing gear of an Air France Boeing 707 flying between Paris and New York, testing its durability against harsh external conditions such as extreme temperature fluctuations, wind pressure, and changes in atmospheric pressure. Upon landing, the wristwatch continued to function perfectly. In contrast, early quartz movements failed to withstand the temperature differences during a similar flight experiment, thus proving the superiority of mechanical movements.
At the time of the A385's release in 1969, its unprecedented gradient dial captivated audiences, and even today, this design, which lends contrast and depth to the dial, is gaining popularity. The revival model faithfully reproduces the warm, metallic tones of the original.
The "Chronomaster Revival A385," exuding a retro charm, is available in two models that capture the style of 1969. The first features a stainless steel "ladder" bracelet, a modern reimagining of the Gay Frères bracelet that symbolized early El Primero models. The second is a light brown calfskin leather strap that develops a unique patina over time.
