MIKIMOTO Pearl School: The Fourth Session for the 120th Anniversary of Pearl Cultivation
The Wonders of Pearls: A Scientific Exploration
This year marks 120 years since the invention of pearl cultivation by MIKIMOTO. To share the allure of pearls with a wider audience, the company has been hosting "Pearl School." The fourth session, "The Wonders of Pearls: A Scientific Exploration," will be held on Saturday, December 14th, at the Tokyo International Forum's Glass Building Conference Rooms in Chiyoda Ward.

The Mystery of Pearl Color and Luster
In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of MIKIMOTO, succeeded in cultivating pearls for the first time in the world. Since then, as the originator of cultured pearls, MIKIMOTO has created exquisite pearl jewelry that radiates timeless brilliance.
In this lecture, staff from the MIKIMOTO Pearl Research Laboratory will explain the science behind the luster and colors of pearls born from oysters. Moving beyond typical quality assessments and selection methods, participants will gain a scientific understanding of pearl structure and the effects of light passing through the nacreous layer, through hands-on experiences.
MIKIMOTO is also actively engaged in research and development to produce high-quality, domestically produced Akoya pearls with consideration for the natural environment, by establishing a model for a "zero-emission pearl farm" that effectively utilizes byproducts from pearl cultivation. This session will also showcase the forefront of world-leading research and development, including the "zero-emission" pearl farm and the "Kairin-gal" device used for early detection of red tides and ocean environmental monitoring, with actual items and samples.
With a capacity of 40 participants, applications can be submitted via the website or by postal mail. This lecture, offered by MIKIMOTO, a company with a deep understanding of pearls cultivated through research since the Meiji era, is a unique opportunity. Why not take this chance to delve deeper into the noble and complex radiance of pearls?
