To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the invention of pearls, MIKIMOTO is launching "YAGURUMA," a new jewelry collection comprising belts, bracelets, and pendants. It will be released on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

The First Model That Established the "MIKIMOTO Style"

Next year marks 125 years since Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of MIKIMOTO, succeeded in culturing pearls for the first time in the world in 1893. A new jewelry collection has been announced to commemorate this anniversary year.

Kokichi Mikimoto, who believed that "pearls have value only when they become jewelry," was passionate about creating items that could rival those from Europe, focusing on design development and technological advancements.

The crystallization of this passion is the obi clasp "Yaguruma," exhibited at the Paris Exposition in 1937. With its multifunctionality—capable of being used as a brooch or ring through interchangeable parts—its exquisite craftsmanship, and its Art Deco design, it remains one of MIKIMOTO's iconic archive jewelry pieces to this day.

It has also become a symbol of MIKIMOTO's unique high jewelry style, known as the "MIKIMOTO Style," established through the fusion of European and Japanese jewelry techniques.

Eighty years after the "Yaguruma" obi clasp received acclaim in Paris, "YAGURUMA" has been born, reinterpreted with a fresh perspective. The lineup features elegant and dignified items such as belts and bracelets made of 18KWG with Akoya pearls, diamonds, and mother-of-pearl, as well as pendants with Akoya pearls, diamonds, and cloisonné enamel.

The belt, in particular, is a luxurious masterpiece, with pearls of varying sizes encircling the waist and a buckle lavishly set with dazzling diamonds.
