Beautiful Life Hidden Within Japan's Natural Scenery
Pique is an inlay technique where organic materials such as shell, tortoiseshell, ivory, and buffalo horn, less than 1mm thick, are carved out and precious metals or shell are embedded. This delicate jewelry technique began in France at the end of the 16th century and was popular mainly in Europe for about 300 years. However, with the changing times at the end of the 19th century, it disappeared, and its techniques were lost along with the artisans.
However, Toshihiko Shiojima, a Japanese jewelry artist, has succeeded in reproducing this legendary technique, uniquely in the world. Since 2012, SEIKO has collaborated with Mr. Shiojima to release limited edition watches with beautiful dials using this technique.
The new models announced at Baselworld in 2013, themed around spring and summer, are elegant tonneau-shaped ladies' watches. They feature the traditional Japanese motifs of the Kanoko lily and the swallowtail butterfly, exquisitely reproduced in three materials and three colors—pure platinum, pure gold, and 18K green gold—on mother-of-pearl dials. This is a special masterpiece born from the crystallization of a legendary technique and delicate Japanese aesthetics.
