My "Ultimate Companion"
When you hear "ultimate companion," some might think of a car, clothes, or writing instruments. For me, it's a "wristwatch."
There are various reasons, but a wristwatch can be worn regardless of the season, has a very long lifespan, and is compact, taking up little space. In other words, I feel that the fact that it's an "item you can easily spend a long time with" makes it a suitable ultimate companion.
However, I wasn't always a watch enthusiast. My main profession is as a navigator, and about three years into my career, I started to become particular about my work tools. I chose a Seiko diver's watch as my work wristwatch.
While working with people of various nationalities on the world's oceans, the "SEIKO" logo that caught my eye each time I checked the time often inspired me to take pride in my work. It was through this experience that I came to believe a wristwatch is the ultimate companion.
In today's society, where we can always know the exact time on our computers and smartphones, a wristwatch might seem like an unnecessary item. However, I believe that wristwatches are packed with profound charm and can have a positive impact on the wearer's life.
Therefore, this time, I would like to introduce four Seiko watches recommended for freshers embarking on a new chapter, categorized by lifestyle.
King Seiko SDKA005
The first watch I'd like to recommend is the King Seiko SDKA005.
King Seiko was born in 1961. At a time when luxury watches were predominantly imported, it was known as a masterpiece created by reflecting unique ideas in movement design and aesthetics to pioneer a new era of Japanese-made watches.
The model that inspired the current SDKA005 was the second-generation King Seiko (nicknamed "KSK"), released in 1965. It was a more practical model than the first generation, featuring water resistance and a second hand stop mechanism.
The simple, beautiful, yet dignified and powerful design of the KSK is masterfully reproduced with modern technology. Furthermore, significant upgrades have been made, such as the addition of a date display and the use of Seiko's thinnest automatic movement caliber, 6L35, resulting in a thinner profile than the original model.
With a case diameter of 38.6mm and a thickness of 10.7mm, the size should fit most Japanese wrists perfectly. It should also fit comfortably under the cuffs of a suit.
This King Seiko model is recommended for those who work in formal settings with suits, value history and tradition, or prefer neat casual wear. It's a watch that makes you feel a sense of uprightness when worn, and it will be a good companion for the capable businessman.
2. Prospex SBEJ009
The second watch I'd like to recommend is the Prospex SBEJ009.
"Prospex" is a brand that offers authentic functions for sports and outdoor activities such as diving and trekking. This model, SBEJ009, was launched last year from this globally popular brand.
It not only features authentic diver's watch specifications like 200m water resistance for diving and a rotating bezel, but the new caliber "6R54" equipped in this model boasts a long power reserve of approximately 72 hours while also featuring a GMT function, making it highly capable for everyday use.
While its specifications give it the appearance of a "tool watch" (a watch that can be used like a tool), its aesthetic appeal is truly surprising. The ceramic bezel is resistant to scratches and has a beautiful, lustrous finish, and the dial features a sunray finish that reflects light radially, creating a very elegant look.
Prospex diver's watches with authentic specifications used to be thick, but in recent years, they have become thinner (a case thickness of just 12.9mm) and shaped to fit the wrist better, significantly improving wearability.
This diver's model is recommended for those who work on-site in work clothes, are drawn to mechanical designs, specifications, and functional beauty, or have outdoor hobbies like mountain climbing or sea diving, and prefer casual attire.
Strong, beautiful, and comfortable. It will be the ultimate companion, offering peace of mind even in demanding situations.
3. Astron SBXD013
The third watch I'd like to recommend is the Astron SBXD013.
Astron is known as the world's first quartz watch, born in 1969. While quartz watches are commonplace worldwide today, Seiko was the first to develop the quartz watch, and the first model was the original Astron.
It is no exaggeration to say that this was a monumental achievement in watchmaking history, a revolutionary development that changed the world. Therefore, Astron is a brand that emphasizes innovation within Seiko and can be considered a symbol of evolution.
This model, SBXD013, is equipped with the new movement "Caliber 3X62," which enhances the reception sensitivity of satellite radio waves. It also features Astron's unique "Super Smart Sensor," which automatically receives time signals from GPS satellites up to twice a day, and a "High-speed Time Zone Correction Function" that quickly adjusts to local time with a single step from anywhere on Earth. These features are ideal for businessmen who value punctuality and jet-setters.
The blue-gray dial conveys a sense of freshness and intelligence. Combined with the lightweight and rust-resistant titanium material and the stylish case design, it creates a youthful and light impression.
This GPS-enabled timepiece is recommended for those who adopt a smart casual style for work, require precise timekeeping, travel frequently, or appreciate the latest technology.
Lightweight and refreshing, smart and accurate. It will be a reliable companion for the capable businessman.
4. LUKIA SSQW072
The fourth watch I'd like to recommend is the LUKIA SSQW072.
LUKIA was launched in 1995. At the time, women's watches were primarily considered accessories, but LUKIA was born as a pioneer in practical timepieces.
Within LUKIA, the "LUKIA Grow" series is a collection that embodies the wish to support women's growth, just as flowers flourish in nature. It aims to be a presence that nurtures their development.
Compared to men, women often have a wider variety of accessories such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, and some may not wear watches. However, precisely because of this, I believe women's watches can add flair to the wrist. And even more so if that watch is from a watch manufacturer.
This LUKIA SSQW072 model features a tonneau case shape, which is neither a typical round nor a sharp rectangular shape. It's an intermediate form that combines both softness and intelligence.
The nuanced pink-brown dial is easy to match with any outfit, and the gentle luster of the mother-of-pearl is also elegant. Furthermore, the pink gold color on the bezel enhances its compatibility with skin tones, making it easier to coordinate with other accessories – a point not to be overlooked.
The movement is solar radio-controlled, ensuring accurate timekeeping, which is also convenient. This watch is recommended for those who want to express playfulness along with intelligence and elegance, enjoy fashion and accessories, or desire a watch that can be worn for both private and professional occasions.
Seiko Boutique Grand Front Osaka will be holding a "Freshers Fair" from Thursday, January 18, 2024, to Thursday, February 29, 2024. We encourage you to visit during this period to find your ultimate companion.
