Expressing Ginza's "Iki" and Nobility on the Dial | SEIKO

The Moment a Man Becomes Hard-Boiled.
This is the Watch to Wear.

I was engrossed in Raymond Chandler during my student days. There was a time when I admired his protagonist, Philip Marlowe. I dreamed of becoming a man who would look good drinking alone at a bar someday. As I dreamed, I realized I had grown much older than Philip Marlowe. Men dream of being hard-boiled. I want to wear this watch when that time comes.

Beyond. With a Refined Modern Style

The drinks crafted by Tokyo's Ginza's master bartenders possess a special magic, even in their classic recipes. No matter the palate, one is surely captivated by the aroma rising from the tingling bubbles on the tongue.

Those effervescent bubbles are called microbubbles. The method is the Infinity Shake. This shaking technique was independently developed by Hisashi Kishi, who received the Medal with Purple Ribbon for his dedication to bartending. The name comes from the trajectory of the shaker, which is shaken in small, horizontal figure-eights. By shaking vigorously before the ice melts into a slush, the sharp edges of the shaved ice create fine bubbles – microbubbles. Each of these bubbles traps the rich aroma of the liqueur. The moment it spreads in your mouth, a glorious fragrance envelops your nostrils from within.

November 7, 2017, 7:00 PM. At STAR BAR TIES in Ginza, Tokyo. Bartender: Hisashi Kishi.

In the West, a good bartender has traditionally been expected to handle multiple customers alone, efficiently managing a large establishment. Their focus is on the owner. However, traditional Japanese bars are different. They subtly observe the customer's actions, offering support without being intrusive, and craft the perfect drink at the perfect moment. Their goals are fundamentally different. It is said that many overseas bartenders visit Japan to learn about the hospitality that thrives in Japanese bars. Even in the bar world, where Western styles were once considered the standard, the Japanese spirit of hospitality resonates globally.

The <Seiko Presage> STAR BAR Limited Edition is a collaborative model born from this background. It embodies the concept of expressing Japanese craftsmanship on the dial and collaborates with world-class bartenders. Their sincere approach to manufacturing and their spirit of continuous exploration for new value are perfectly aligned.

Specifically, Mr. Kishi, mentioned earlier, translates Japanese scenes into cocktails, and dials are created to match their ambiance. Two concepts were chosen: "Starlight" and "Sakura Fubuki." Under the downlights, the watch dial becomes particularly eloquent. It creates light reflections through a manufacturing process unlike any for a standard dial. The off-white diffuse reflection is a cherry blossom blizzard. The twinkling of stars is starlight. Looking at the dial, one might utter a joke-like phrase, as if losing track of time. It's a feeling of being gently drawn in.

Starlight: Chita, a Glenmorangie whisky, is combined with violet liqueur, accented with the aroma of carbonation and lemon.

Sakura Fubuki: Based on a Japanese gin made with cherry blossom petals and yuzu,甘酒 (amazake), sakura syrup, and coconut water are added.

When choosing a wristwatch, most people likely consider their suit style. However, choosing based on such sentiment is not a bad idea. In fact, perhaps such sentiment is necessary for a tool that measures the concept of time.

At Mr. Kishi's bar, "STAR BAR TIES," an advance exhibition of the STAR BAR Limited Edition models is being held until Monday, December 25th. Of course, the two original cocktails are also available to order. We encourage you to experience the taste of these dials under the downlights.
