SEIKO Launches Limited Edition Model Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Seiko Divers Watch
SEIKO
50th Anniversary of Japanese Divers Watch
JAMSTEC Special Model Released
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Japanese divers watch. Naturally, SEIKO, which pioneered this category, has introduced a divers model befitting this milestone. This time, a special model has been released in tribute to JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), a pioneer in Japanese marine research.

High-Performance Divers Watch with Ultra Hi-Beat Movement at 36,000 Vibrations Per Hour
JAMSTEC, a national research and development agency, advances research into marine and Earth environments, seabed resources, earthquake mechanisms, and extremophiles. It also develops and operates exploration technologies for these studies, conducting scientific drilling with the "Chikyu" deep-sea drilling vessel and scientific surveys with the "Shinkai 6500" manned submersible. It is a pioneer in Japan's marine research.
2015 marks exactly 50 years since SEIKO first completed the Japanese divers watch in 1965. Several commemorative models have been announced this year, and a special model is being released in respect of JAMSTEC, an institution that can be called a forerunner in marine research.
The Prospex Marine Master Professional JAMSTEC Special Model is characterized by its case, which appears to be carved from a solid block of metal. While typical watches have a case back, this watch lacks one, featuring a complete one-piece case construction. Combined with its unique L-shaped gasket, it effectively seals out helium gas, even during saturation diving using high-pressure mixed gases like helium.
Conventional divers watches often feature a helium escape valve, but this model does not. This is because it possesses a perfectly airtight structure capable of withstanding depths of 1000m from the outset.
The case and bracelet are made of lightweight yet robust titanium. Furthermore, each component is treated with "DiaShield," SEIKO's proprietary coating technology that protects the surface from scratches.
The balance wheel, which governs the movement's accuracy, oscillates at an ultra-high beat of 36,000 vibrations per hour, powered by the "8L55" caliber, which achieves stable precision. Despite the challenges in securing power reserve for ultra hi-beat movements, the use of proprietary materials for the mainspring and balance spring allows for a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.
The dial features a beautiful stamped pattern and a blue "HI-BEAT36000" logo, with various design elements evoking the beauty of the sea. The silver numerals on the bezel are treated with laser-applied anodic oxidation, preventing peeling or fading and ensuring high legibility over time.
This special model, inspired by JAMSTEC's ongoing research across the world's oceans, is a precious limited edition of 500 pieces, fitting for celebrating the milestone of SEIKO's divers watches.
