The Enduring Beauty of a Simple Three-Hand Watch

Approximately 80 years since the birth of the Calatrava in 1932, a new masterpiece, the "Calatrava Ref. 5227," has joined Patek Philippe's grand tradition.

The rack-and-snail ivory dial, featuring applied trapezoidal baton hour markers and round minute markers, is stripped of all extraneous elements, pursuing only legibility. Its face, combining sharp dauphine hour and minute hands with a seconds hand featuring a counterweight, is worthy of being called the "ultimate dial design" for a simple three-hand watch.

The beautifully slim 9.24mm case employs an invisible hinge, making it appear as though the case back is not hinged when viewed from the front. Every detail, from the bezel and lugs to the crown, embodies the maker's aesthetic. Like the dial, the design follows the Bauhaus philosophical principle that "form follows function."



The self-winding movement with a calendar, "Caliber 324 S C," is equipped with a Gyromax balance for fine precision adjustment via weight positioning, a Spiromax® hairspring made of Silinvar®, a proprietary silicon-based material that eliminates concerns about magnetization, and a 21K gold rotor for efficient winding.

The 39mm diameter case, the ideal size for a standard watch, is available in three types of gold: yellow, white, and rose.
