The 4810 Collection Appears to Celebrate the 110th Anniversary (1)

In 2016, Montblanc, known for its writing instruments, celebrated its 110th anniversary. The watchmaking division began in the 1990s and made a spectacular debut at the Geneva Salon in 1997. Since then, its progress has been remarkable, establishing itself as a respected manufacture brand. The 110th anniversary also saw the unveiling of a strong new collection.

Establishing the 4810 Collection

The new "4810" collection was unveiled to commemorate Montblanc's 110th anniversary. "4810" refers to the elevation of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. Drawing inspiration from the "Star 4810" collection that originally debuted in 2006, it inherits the authentic, rounded case style, the Montblanc star emblem positioned near the 6 o'clock mark on the dial, and the ripple-like guilloché decoration. These elements have been reinterpreted in this new collection.

The concept is Hamburg, Germany, the birthplace of Montblanc, which was once called the "gateway to the world" during the company's early days. It evokes the image of a vibrant city where people, ships, and technologies converged.

A wide array of watches will be launched, but here we focus on models that evoke the imagery of sea voyages and navigation. This theme is fitting for a commemorative year, with perfect models appearing in both the anniversary and regular lines.

Miniature Paintings Rendered with Artistic Precision

Among the commemorative collection celebrating the launch of "4810," the high-end model is the "4810 Exo Tourbillon Slim 110 Years Anniversary Edition."

In terms of mechanism, it features the Exo Tourbillon, a signature complication for Montblanc. This mechanism places the balance wheel, which would normally be housed within the rotating carriage, on top of and outside the carriage. This allows for a larger diameter balance wheel, unconstrained by the carriage, contributing to enhanced precision.

The mechanism is Montblanc's in-house developed Twin Flyback. When the reset button is pressed during chronograph measurement, the chronograph hands instantly return to zero and immediately resume measurement. With this mechanism, not only the chronograph seconds hand but also the 60-minute counter hand at 6 o'clock perform a zero reset and resume measurement.

It is equipped with a second time zone display, essential for international travel, showing local time with the regular hour hand and home time with a blue skeleton hand. The globe illustration at 12 o'clock is a sub-dial that displays the home time in a 24-hour format, synchronized with the blue hand. The blue portion of the sub-dial's outer ring indicates night, while the white portion indicates day.

A Groundbreaking World Timer, Revisited

The "4810 Orbis Terrarum" is a reinterpretation of the "Orbis Terrarum" world timer, originally introduced in 2015 as part of the "Heritage Spirit" collection, now adapted for the new collection.

A world timer typically displays the current time worldwide using a combination of a 24-hour ring and a ring with representative city names from various time zones. While manufacturers employ different methods for adjusting the displayed time, Montblanc is no exception.

In the "Orbis Terrarum," pressing the button at 8 o'clock advances the city name ring, which in turn moves the time ring. The hour hand then indicates the time of the city positioned at 6 o'clock. Adjusting for local time when traveling abroad is simple: just press the button repeatedly until the desired city name aligns with the 6 o'clock position.

The graphical representation is also exceptional. A Northern Hemisphere map at the center of the dial is depicted in sync with the city name ring. Above the map, a transparent disc moves in conjunction with the time ring. The transparent disc is semi-transparently colored to indicate nighttime, causing the map in the night zones to appear darker. This not only allows for an intuitive understanding of global time differences but also makes one aware of the Earth's rotation, making it a highly innovative world timer.

With this function revised for the "4810" collection as a permanent model, the map is now color-coded by climate zone, adding further visual appeal. It is recommended as a witty and practical timepiece for those who frequently travel abroad.
