Next-Generation Caliber for Grand Seiko: Cal. 9SA5
We now delve into the more technical aspects. The next-generation Caliber 9SA5, completed by Seiko in 2020, has already been incorporated into some limited models, but its mass production is finally realized with this model.
The case back is a transparent sapphire crystal, showcasing the Caliber 9SA5 movement within.
The Caliber 9SA5 features an escapement with improved transmission efficiency, reducing power loss, and incorporates two mainsprings for power.
These factors enable a long power reserve of approximately 80 hours, despite being a high-beat movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour.
High-beat movements are advantageous for maintaining accuracy, but they consume significant power due to the rapid oscillation of the escapement, making it difficult to extend the power reserve. However, Seiko has resolved this issue through the aforementioned methods. Furthermore, it incorporates a free-sprung balance system in the escapement.
The free-sprung balance system is a special device for fine-tuning the oscillation of the balance wheel. Instead of a conventional regulator with an index pin attached to the mainplate, it features adjustment screws directly on the balance wheel itself. This method allows for more stable accuracy and is considered a hallmark of high-end mechanical watches.
You can see the balance wheel has four slits with small screws. The purpose is to adjust the center of gravity by moving these screws in or out, thereby eliminating any eccentricity in the hairspring (the thin spring wound concentrically inside the balance wheel).

So, what exactly is Grand Seiko? Its history reveals the answer.
Grand Seiko was born in 1960, as Japan entered its period of high economic growth following post-war reconstruction. This was an era when wristwatches were becoming widespread in Japan, and greater accuracy was demanded of mechanical watches.

Born in such an era, the "Grand Seiko" boasted accuracy equivalent to the "Excellent" grade of Swiss chronometer standards. Furthermore, it was characterized by a dignity that rivaled its overseas counterparts and a timeless design that ensured longevity.
Grand Seiko "44GS" (Manufactured 1967) *Not for Sale
In 1967, Grand Seiko introduced an epoch-making model that would later be affectionately known as the "44GS." This model established not only the identity of high accuracy and timeless design but also "Seiko Style" – an exterior design that was legible and comfortable to wear.
Grand Seiko "9S55" (Manufactured 1998) *Not for Sale
After leading the quartz era, which revolutionized watch accuracy standards, Seiko revived the mechanical Grand Seiko in 1998. Moreover, its accuracy matched or exceeded that of the heyday of mechanical watches. We hear that many retired Seiko technicians gathered to once again produce high-accuracy mechanical watches of Grand Seiko class.
Thus, Grand Seiko began to shine once more.
