It's called Onion Ring® for its resemblance to stacked, sliced onions. While the name is casual, the jewelry itself possesses a captivating luster and curvilinear beauty that immediately signals its supreme quality.
The creator, "MOJITO," is a fashion brand that pays homage to the legendary author Ernest Hemingway. Designer Hiromi Yamashita openly expresses his admiration for Hemingway—a man of bold spirit who pursued writing, boxed, and sailed the vast ocean. The Mojito, a refreshing mint cocktail, is said to be a favorite drink of Hemingway's.
Hemingway, it turns out, was also fond of onions, often keeping one in his pocket to stave off hunger. Thus, the name "Onion Ring®" was bestowed upon this high jewelry piece, composed of platinum (PT950) and yellow gold (K18).
This Onion Ring® actually has a predecessor called the Seven Days Ring. That piece, consisting of seven silver rings, was inspired by a set of vintage rings worn by the Tuareg people, a nomadic tribe living in the Sahara Desert of West Africa. The Tuareg reportedly wore the rings in a sequence, like a calendar marking the days of the week.
The Onion Ring®, an evolution of the Seven Days Ring, features a complex design of eight slender rings—five in platinum and three in 18K yellow gold—interlocking intricately. This not only adds substantial volume but also creates a deeper expression through the interplay of contrasting cool and warm tones. This multifaceted nature, both intelligent and alluring, is the true essence of the Onion Ring®. It also echoes the protagonist of "The Old Man and the Sea," embodying both ruggedness and gentleness—a charm that resonates with Hemingway's works.
Unlike the calendar-like arrangement of its predecessor, these rings are not separate but interconnected. Naturally, they cannot be simply cast and polished. Each ring requires meticulous handcrafting by artisans to be integrated and secured. Furthermore, the diameter of each of the eight rings is precisely calculated for their combined state, requiring numerous adjustments to achieve the final form. Yamashita's insistence on "Made in Japan" stems from the fact that such exquisite craftsmanship is indispensable for its creation.
Its appeal lies in its versatility; worn with the platinum facing forward, it exudes intelligence, while the gold side offers a more radiant presence. This adaptability ensures it remains captivating even with daily wear. Crafted from select materials, its character deepens further with each passing day.
Like a watch, jewelry can be a lifelong asset. As an iconic item for expressing one's "sense," it holds even greater significance than a timepiece, yet can appear vulgar if ostentatious. This makes selection challenging. However, the Onion Ring®, with its restrained elegance born from superior materials and craftsmanship, and its rich narrative, might just be the ideal jewelry for the discerning, mature man.
If you have a finger to spare, imagine the Onion Ring® adorning it, emitting a seductive gleam. Then, envision its luster deepening as time passes, much like your own journey through life.
The Onion Ring® comes with a special pouch crafted from Porosus small crocodile leather on one side and vegetable-tanned calfskin on the other. Porosus is an exceptionally rare and exquisitely patterned luxury material among crocodile leathers, itself a lifelong asset. The pouch features a zip closure and can also be used as a card or coin case.
The product is exhibited and sold at "ARCH Aoyama," and available for purchase online at the "ARCH" and "MOJITO" stores.
