Giugiaro's Miracle on the Wrist, Again
For car enthusiasts, Giorgetto Giugiaro is a household name. After joining Fiat's design department in 1955, he became chief stylist at Italian coachbuilder Bertone. In 1981, he established Giugiaro Design. His representative works include the first-generation Volkswagen Golf, Passat, and Scirocco, as well as the Maserati Bora and Merak, and the Lancia Thema and Delta, and the Lotus Esprit. For those who grew up in the supercar era of the 1980s, these cars evoke fond memories.
Now, a nostalgic wristwatch designed by Giugiaro is being reissued for his fans. The world's first analog quartz chronograph, designed by Giugiaro for SEIKO in 1983, has been reissued. At the time, it was developed with the concept of a "watch that perfectly suits the wrist of a car or motorcycle driver." That model is now revived in five new color variations.
Until then, most watches were the common round shape, but Giugiaro adopted an asymmetrical design, significantly changing the conventional concept of watches. The newly released models incorporate contemporary color schemes. The design remains the same as the original, with enlarged push buttons for operation even while wearing driving gloves and a highly legible dial, now available in five color variations.
According to Mr. Kojo, who was in charge of product planning for this reissue, he visited Giugiaro Design in Italy again for this project and received color proposals directly from Mr. Giugiaro himself. It's truly enviable. I would have loved to accompany him and cover the story. As someone who grew up in the supercar generation, the name Giugiaro was synonymous with dreams. For those who couldn't afford them back then, this is an opportunity to indulge as adults. I recommend this Giugiaro as a new partner for your drives, alongside your beloved car.
