BREGUET TRADITION

Text by OPENERS

The current president of Breguet also serves as Nicolas G. Hayek, Chairman of the Swatch Group. This indicates the significant importance of the Breguet brand within the group. President Hayek has been dedicated to reviving the masterpieces invented by the founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet, approximately 200 years ago.

This "Breguet Tradition" 2005 model was created under the direct leadership of President Hayek. It is a wristwatch that faithfully reproduces the mechanisms of Breguet's past pocket watches. The movement, housed in an 18K yellow or white gold case, features a skeleton structure on the dial side, except for the time display, allowing for full appreciation of its intricate workings.

The layout, with the mainspring barrel positioned centrally and the gear train responsible for power transmission and the escapement governing the watch's accuracy placed on the 6 o'clock side, is inspired by historical pocket watches.

Furthermore, the power reserve indicator also replicates the mechanism as originally invented by Breguet. The balance wheel also features the distinctive shape conceived by Breguet. In the 19th century, Breguet developed what is now known as the free-sprung balance system—a mechanism for fine-tuning accuracy by adjusting the balance wheel's weight through the in-and-out movement of a small screw. This system is also adopted in the current "Breguet Tradition." Naturally, the "Breguet overcoil," where the final end of the hairspring is curved more tightly to prevent distortions, is also reproduced.

And most notably, it incorporates the "parachute" (or "Parachoc") shock-absorbing device, also invented by Breguet. This ingenious shock resistance mechanism features a recess in the jewel that holds the balance staff, mounted on a base with a leaf spring, to absorb any shocks applied to the balance staff. The parachute system has been updated with modern improvements and even patented anew. The meticulous revival of so many of Breguet's mechanisms is a testament to President Hayek's passion for recreating historical horological engineering.

BRAND HISTORY

Abraham-Louis Breguet, a rare genius watchmaker who developed complex mechanisms such as the tourbillon and the ring-type minute repeater, and is still credited with "advancing watchmaking by 200 years," established his workshop in Paris, France, in 1775, marking the beginning of the Breguet brand's history.

After the founder's death in 1823, ownership changed hands several times. In 1970, when Chaumet acquired the company, they, with the collaboration of Daniel Roth—hailed as "the reincarnation of Breguet"—accomplished a restoration project of the brand's legendary timepieces.

Thus, even in an era dominated by quartz watches, the prestigious Breguet name was revived.

In 1999, when ownership transferred to the Swatch Group, the brand began releasing a series of high-end, superior quality timepieces, focusing on complications such as perpetual calendars and tourbillons.

In recent years, Breguet has been producing historical models that feature a modernized version of the "parachute" shock-absorbing device invented by the brand, while also introducing next-generation timepieces that incorporate silicon—a material gaining attention as a future standard—into parts of their movements. The brand is indeed showcasing a diverse range of developments, blending the old and the new, befitting the legacy of its genius founder.
