A Watch Cherished by a Life Dedicated to Research
Marie Curie (née Skłodowska, November 7, 1867 – July 4, 1934), the physicist and chemist originally from Poland, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She was not only the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, but also the first person to win two, and the first to be awarded in two different scientific fields: physics and chemistry.
The Patek Philippe she possessed is a pendant watch that was purchased by the Geneva Society of Arts and Sciences and then presented to Madame Curie by the society. It was crafted around 1893, with records indicating its purchase by the society on February 24, 1894. This masterpiece, also known as 'The Garden,' is distinguished by its exquisite cloisonné enamel painting, which vividly depicts a profusion of flowers not only on the case back but also on the bezel, rendered in rich colors.
The composition is intricate, featuring pansies, lilies, and roses rendered in three dimensions in the foreground, while a distant landscape of mountains, a lake likely Lake Geneva, a statue on a pedestal, and a pavilion are depicted using perspective. It is truly remarkable that such a detailed painting was rendered within a space of just 34mm in diameter. This piece showcases the exceptional skill and artistry of cloisonné enamel painting of the era.
The white enamel dial features blue Roman numerals for the hour markers and gold Arabic numerals on the outer ring for minute indications. The hands are designed in the Louis XV style, a common aesthetic for Patek Philippe pendant watches of that period.
Gazing upon the miniature garden depicted on the case, she may have found moments of respite amidst her demanding schedule of research and mentoring her students.
