A Music Box with a Miniature Clock and a Chirping Bird
Around 1770, Geneva became a hub for remarkable advancements in automata (mechanical figures) and singing bird technology. As this mechanism, which made objects appear lifelike, became smaller, it was incorporated into pocket watches and snuff boxes, gaining immense popularity not only across Europe but also in the Middle Eastern and Chinese markets. Among these, the singing bird captivated royalty worldwide.
Models varied widely, including box types where a bird would pop out when the lid was opened, aviary types with multiple birds singing different melodies, and unique pistol types where a bird emerged from the barrel when the trigger was pulled. The sheer diversity of these creations attests to their popularity at the time.
This singing bird is a precious piece crafted by Patek Philippe around 1874. When the button is pressed, the lid opens, and a bird appears. It then begins to chirp while flapping its wings, just like a real bird. Its movements are controlled by an intricate mechanism, and its song is produced by a small bellows. The engraved decoration on the box is as exquisite as the bird's beautiful song. Furthermore, the lid features a miniature cloisonné enamel painting of Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc massif.
Box: 99.9mm, Height 63.8mm, Thickness 37.5mm
