A Special Exhibition Commemorating 175 Years

Patek Philippe Exhibition: Timepieces Through History

In 2014, Patek Philippe, the world's preeminent watch brand, celebrates its 175th anniversary. This year also marks 150 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Japan. To commemorate both milestones, a special exhibition will be held for three days only, from January 17th, at the Seikado Art Museum in Meiji Jingu Gaien.

Approximately 80 museum pieces will be brought to Japan, ranging from a pocket watch from 1851 to a pendant watch crafted around 1914. These timepieces showcase the artistry and cutting-edge technology of the era, brought to life by the finest artisans of the time, including watchmakers, goldsmiths, engravers, enamellers, and engineers specializing in intricate mechanisms. Many of these watches feature complex complications, offering a glimpse into Patek Philippe's mastery of watchmaking from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

Many of the historical figures who owned these treasured timepieces are renowned in history. Reflecting on these historical figures through these precious pieces offers a unique pleasure.

Concurrently, ten representative wristwatches from the company's iconic collections, including the 'Calatrava' introduced in 1932, are also on display as museum pieces. These pieces highlight the enduring design principles that have been passed down to current models.

The Seikado Art Museum in Meiji Jingu Gaien houses paintings depicting Emperor Meiji's life from birth to death, as well as historical scenes from the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration periods. The Meiji era was a time of modernization, bridging the late Edo period and the dawn of a new Japan. This was also an era of innovation in culture, arts, and industry across Europe and America, and watchmaking was no exception. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to revisit this dynamic period through both paintings and timepieces.

The gathering of so many rare and valuable timepieces in one place is an exceptional event in Japan. We invite you to immerse yourself in the world of Patek Philippe on this occasion.
