Experiencing the Spirit of Santos: A Journey to San Francisco Vol. 3

Inspired by the new collection of "Santos de Cartier," the Editor-in-Chief embarked on a fashion shoot immediately upon returning home. The past and present, tradition and innovation, merged with the watch's presence, creating an even more striking style.

Day 3, and Upon Returning Home

The next morning, we had breakfast at the hotel before heading to the airport. In the car, as I recalled the photograph of Alberto Santos-Dumont I saw the previous evening, I felt an urge to capture a similar homage. His strong gaze, magnificent mustache, dignified posture—imagining the great man, the allure of the Santos de Cartier grew immensely within me. Even on the plane, Alberto Santos-Dumont's image lingered in my mind.

Even after arriving, for three days, whenever I had a moment, Alberto Santos-Dumont appeared before me. He had already stepped out of the postcard, smiling and dancing like a joker emerging from a card. Frankly, I love the style of artists from around 1900s Paris. Having found Alberto Santos-Dumont as a stylistic motif, I had to bring it to life in my own way.

So, how should I shoot this? I meticulously planned every detail in my mind. Yan would be the perfect model! Yan, with his mohawk, but with a fake mustache and hat added, I became convinced that no one else could embody this role. Yan, whom I occasionally ask to model, his vibrant reactions and musician's sensitivity...

…was superimposed with Alberto Santos-Dumont in my mind.

Now, what about the clothes? Faithfully recreating that photograph would be difficult. First, the hat. I used a wide-brimmed hat from my own collection, a Gucci, and a few from Kijima Takayuki. I couldn't find a high-collar shirt, so I opted for a Tom Ford piece from my collection with a similar feel. This was a custom order from the Tom Ford store in New York some time ago.

For ties, I used one purchased at Tom Ford two years ago and a regimental stripe from Dunhill.

Both vests are from my personal collection; I used a single-breasted Tom Ford and a quilted Alexander McQueen. The jackets and coats are from Dunhill. In the end, I think both achieved a look close to the image.

Of course, on my wrist was the Santos de Cartier.

Moving away from the photographic image of Alberto Santos-Dumont, I paired it with a modern costume. The seventies-like suit and turtleneck sweater are from Dunhill, and the sunglasses are Tom Ford. The combination of the bi-color case and the seventies aesthetic blends seamlessly.

Speaking of San Francisco, where the event was held, I'm reminded of the movie "Dirty Harry." Once I started thinking about that, Yan began to resemble Clint Eastwood, so I've incorporated that into the background and poses. Perhaps a bit of a stretch?

What, then, was different between the era when Alberto Santos-Dumont lived his life with dreams as an aviator, and today?

Taking inspiration from his meticulously crafted attire, I was able to expand on romantic fantasies this time as well. I always want to chase my dreams, which perhaps means always harboring admiration for something. That's how I felt about my encounter with Alberto.
