The "KUNDO (Koyama)" Model, Born from a Meeting of Minds with Pierre Kunz Himself!
"This Cupidon 'KUNDO' model was created for me by Pierre Kunz himself, the owner and watchmaker, during my visit to Basel," says Koyama. They hit it off due to shared interests, such as owning Range Rovers from the same era and the similar sound of their names, 'Kunz' and 'Kundo'.
"Pierre Kunz's Cupidon was originally a model he designed for his wife. When I met him for the interview, he told me various anecdotes about it. Looking through the see-through case back, you can see a tiny angel, a snake aiming for a heart-shaped apple, and pigeons watching them... He transformed the mechanical movement into something with the narrative quality of a painting. I was drawn to its delicacy and sensibility."
This "KUNDO" model is one of only three pieces made worldwide. "Among the three, the stone colors are subtly different. I chose orange for the stone and the strap because I like the color orange. I own another Cupidon; this is my second, the first being a model with a retrograde mechanism. I particularly enjoy the Cupidon's three-part second hand, and I can watch its movement for hours without getting bored."
When does Koyama choose to wear this "KUNDO" model from his extensive watch collection? "I run a company called 'Orange,' and I wear it for important presentations or when we go out for dinner together." On the day of our interview, he sported a modern-traditional look, pairing it with a Thom Browne jacket.

A Glimpse into His Impressive Watch Collection!
Koyama, known for his passion for and collection of watches, also shared some of his other timepieces. These include a Breguet "TYPE XX," a Rolex "Daytona," a Franck Muller "MASTER BANKER," a Patek Philippe "WORLD TIME," a Jaeger-LeCoultre "LIMITED SERIES No.0623 Aston Martin," a Cartier "Roadster," a Jaeger-LeCoultre "Reverso Quadra," an Hublot "Big Bang," and a Jaeger-LeCoultre "Reverso" which he received as an award for winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for "Departures" in 2009.—Quite an impressive lineup.
With such a large collection, how does he choose which watch to wear each day? "I don't change them every day; if I find one I like, I tend to wear it for a while. However, I do choose differently depending on the situation when I travel. For trips around Europe, I take my Patek Philippe 'WORLD TIME' with its GMT function. For presentations or when I need good luck, I wear my Hublot 'Big Bang.' It's also great for beach trips to places like Hawaii."
When asked about his next desired watch, Koyama mentioned a Richard Mille model scheduled to be unveiled this year.
"It was one of the pieces that most caught my eye at this year's Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. Richard Mille numbers its models sequentially based on their development, and that numbering also appealed to me. It's a shame I can't reveal the specific model until March 23rd, but it's incredibly light and chic, and I really want it."
Finally, we asked Koyama what a wristwatch means to him. "A wristwatch marks my own time, so it's like a 'footprint.' It's always close by, working just for me, which makes me feel a deep affection for it. It becomes like an extension of myself, so I'd like to pass my watches down as mementos to various people even after I'm gone."
