I Take Off My Watch When Meeting People

For men, watches are often seen as a fashion item to express oneself. However, for Tanijiri, a watch is by no means a tool for self-expression. In fact, he sometimes takes it off when meeting people.

"I often don't wear a watch. When I wear one, I tend to glance at it. So, during meetings, I feel it's a shame to make the other person feel self-conscious by making them think I'm worried about the time, so I make a point of taking it off."

Nevertheless, a watch is still necessary for checking appointment times. The Seiko Watch "WIRED," a gift from a client, helps him manage his busy daily schedule.

"I received this about two and a half years ago from a client for whom I designed a villa. Since it was a gift, I decided to wear it. I like that it's a radio-controlled watch, so the time doesn't go off. I'm not very punctual, so it gives me peace of mind knowing it won't be wrong (laughs). Also, it supports international times, which is very helpful."

France, the UK, Australia, China, Singapore, Mexico... Tanijiri, active worldwide, has visited countless countries. This watch, which also displays Japan time, has been invaluable. While Tanijiri doesn't wear a watch much these days, he was once interested in collecting them.

Choosing a Watch That Complements Architectural Design

"When I was younger, I splurged on a double-named Rolex and Tiffany watch, but I was so broke I gave it to a friend (laughs). I regret it now... I also own a Lip watch. I remember buying it because I was captivated by its extremely simple design. If I were to buy a new watch, I would probably choose something with a simple design. I might like figuring out how to use the minimal functions myself. This is similar to my work in architecture, where I aim to provide solutions for function and environment through design, rather than relying too heavily on equipment and materials.Perhaps it's a similar sentiment."

Tanijiri's approach to design, which also reflects his creative style, extends to his future watch choices. We asked Tanijiri what kind of watch he would design if he could.

"A watch without hands. I believe that time, in its essence, is something to be felt rather than observed. I'd like to create a 'watch of change,' like the sun and moon signaling the passage of a day."
