BRAND HISTORY
The "Quartz Crisis" of 1969, triggered by the launch of quartz watches, dealt a severe blow to long-established Swiss watchmakers who had traditionally focused on mechanical timepieces.
Amidst this turmoil, in 1983, a revolutionary concept in watchmaking emerged, breathing new life into the declining Swiss watch industry. It was a watch for the new age, featuring a quartz movement housed in a plastic case, a radical departure from tradition. Nicolas G. Hayek (now Chairman of the Swatch Group), who led the charge, named the brand "Swatch" to emphasize its pure Swiss origins while overturning existing conventions.
Beyond rethinking materials, a novel construction was developed where the case served as the baseplate for the movement (a feature exclusive to the "Originals" line). This, along with a reduction in parts, led to significant cost savings. The combination of high practicality and affordability quickly conquered the global market.
However, the innovative materials and construction were merely behind-the-scenes developments. The true appeal of Swatch lies in its dizzying array of design variations, unbound by form or color. The brand steadily expanded its product line with "POP Swatch" in 1986, "Chrono" in 1990, and "Automatic" in 1991, surpassing 100 million units produced in the same year. Under the keywords "High Design," "High Quality," and "Reasonable Price," it grew into a global brand.
Subsequently, Swatch continued to launch unique collections, such as the "Skin," the world's thinnest plastic watch, and "Swatch Beat," which introduced the new concept of "Internet Time." In the 1990s, its popularity soared, commanding premium prices and fostering a large community of collectors worldwide. Furthermore, the Swatch Group was established, centered around the Swatch brand, evolving into a major force shaping the watch industry today.
Each season, Swatch unveils designs that reflect the latest fashion trends. The 2007 collection was developed around the following five themes:
● Spirit of the Night
A collection for powerful women who inspire hope.
● Sweet & Fantasy
Expressing the world of delicate, sophisticated, and cute young girls.
● Swatch talk
Embodying the Swatch worldview through abstract designs and pop colors.
● Sense of Nature
A unisex collection conveying the beauty of nature.
● Xceleration
An exciting, challenge-driven collection essential for sports fans.
