An online journey to meet the young fishermen who practice sustainable fishing for "shiro ebi" (Japanese glass shrimp) – a unique experience found nowhere else in the world. "Joy of Encounter Before Travel. Online TOYAMA Travel 2." now accepting applications.
Toyama Prefecture is developing a unique online tourism initiative, "Joy of Encounter Before Travel. Online TOYAMA Travel," allowing people to experience Toyama's diverse charms. The first session, featuring an impromptu wagashi-making demonstration by Katsuhiro Hikinami, the fourth-generation owner of the long-established wagashi shop Hikiami Kōgetsudō (which also appeared in the drama "Watashitachi wa Douka Shiteiru"), and a talk by a Takaoka copperware manufacturer, was a great success. The second installment offers a talk with young fishermen who practice "shiro ebi" (Japanese glass shrimp) fishing – an experience found nowhere else in the world – along with footage of their fishing activities, and a talk by the master sake brewer from Wakatsuru Brewery.
Young Fishermen and Their Sustainable "Shiro Ebi" Catch in Toyama Bay
Toyama Bay is a treasure trove of marine resources, known as a "natural fish tank" where 500 out of the 800 types of fish and shellfish inhabiting the Sea of Japan can be found. Among these, "shiro ebi," prized for their transparency and beauty, earning them the nickname "Jewels of Toyama Bay," are fished only in Toyama Bay, making it a unique location worldwide.
To protect the precious "shiro ebi" resource, which has gained increasing popularity in recent years, the fishermen engaged in this trade have adopted a "pool system" (equal distribution among all vessels) and are committed to sustainable fishing practices. During the event, participants will enjoy a talk by fishermen from the "Toyama Bay Shiro Ebi Club" and watch videos of actual fishing operations. As a "travel souvenir," attendees will receive a luxurious lineup in advance: "sashimi" showcasing the elegant sweetness of white shrimp, "konbumaki" (kelp-rolled) white shrimp – a local specialty – and "Wakatsuru Brewery Yō no Shizuku" sake. The master brewer from Wakatsuru Brewery, who selected the local sake, will also participate in the event, discussing enjoyable ways to savor Japanese sake and engaging in a dialogue with the fishermen. Why not enjoy a long autumn evening themed around shiro ebi and sake?
