NUSA, a lifestyle goods brand utilizing the techniques of the traditional craft "Mikata," presents its first product: a bento box made of cypress wood, also expected to have antibacterial properties.

In Japan, there is a sacred stand called "Mikata" (or "Sampo") used since ancient times to place offerings during Shinto rituals. The familiar sight of this stand is likely the one used for tsukimi dango (moon-viewing dumplings) during Jugoya (the fifteenth night of the lunar calendar). "Mikata" is a traditional craft of Aichi, specifically Owari Buddhist altar fittings, made from Kiso cypress wood, with artisans meticulously shaping and folding the material by hand. Iwata Sampo Seisakusho Co., Ltd., which has been crafting "Mikata" for 300 years, is launching [NUSA], an interior brand that leverages its techniques and craftsmanship.

The first product announced by the brand is a bento box, <BENTO>. It is supervised by Yukako Nogami, active as a culinary researcher and bento expert, and designed by product designer Takumi Shimamura. In the future, a wide range of items are planned, including trays, bowls, folding stools, and tables.

[NUSA], Meaning "A Special Gift"

Designated as a national traditional craft, "Mikata" was used in rituals like moon viewing to pray for good harvests and prosperity, and in ancient times, it was used to present offerings to nobility. It consists of a base called "Todo" topped with a plate called "Oshiki," and the Todo has three holes on its sides called "Kurikata." The shape of these holes is significant, resembling a jewel said to ward off misfortune and purify turbid water.

While preserving the traditional methods of crafting "Mikata," Iwata Sampo Seisakusho Co., Ltd. is also exploring products that fit contemporary lifestyles. The new brand name "NUSA" embodies the meaning of "a special gift," referring to offerings presented to the gods.

First Product: <BENTO> Bento Box, Combining Antibacterial Properties & Lightness

Leveraging the antibacterial properties and lightness of cypress wood, the brand's first product is this bento box. It features a fitted lid, similar to Magewappa bentos, with a distinctive hole on one side, echoing the design of the "Mikata." This hole facilitates easy opening and closing by allowing air circulation. However, by applying the included waterproof seal, the colored seal peeking through the hole can be used to identify the owner or the type of bento. The waterproof seals come in six colors, allowing for customization based on mood.

The First Product from the Brand: <BENTO> Bento Box

The body and lid are crafted from domestic cypress wood using the techniques developed for "Mikata." The inherent antibacterial properties of cypress ensure safe use. Furthermore, the refreshing, natural scent of cypress complements rice, undoubtedly whetting the appetite. The version with dividers is ideal for side dishes. Beyond its use as a bento box, it can also serve as a storage container for dried sweets or tea.
