Kai Group to Host In-Person Event in Shinjuku Takashimaya to Share the Art of Sharpening

Kai Corporation, a global cutlery manufacturer, held a real-world event in Shinjuku Takashimaya on May 11th (Saturday) and 12th (Sunday), 2024. The event, centered around the original vehicle "TOGI CAR™" created as part of the sharpening awareness project "Togi-katsu," aimed to convey the art of sharpening.

"Togi-katsu" is an initiative to promote sustainable actions, such as restoring sharpness by sharpening knives and using good quality items for a long time. This event marks the first in a series, with plans for future events in other regions.

Scenes from the Event

The event offered a variety of engaging content for visitors to learn about sharpening. A consultation space was also available where attendees could seek advice from knife masters regarding questions about choosing the right knife or whetstone.

Additionally, a display featured a fixture with the blade removed and the blade body encased in acrylic, exposing the handle, allowing visitors to experience holding a knife handle.
Alongside sharpening lectures by knife masters and a knife quiz testing everyday knowledge about kitchen knives, the event showcased various attractions to capture visitor interest. This included an exhibition of the corporate timeline, displayed on November 8th, 2023 (Good Blade Day) to commemorate Kai's 115th anniversary, and the "TOGI CAR™," created to promote sharpening.

About "TOGI CAR™"

The design features an impactful exterior that makes it appear as if a knife is inserted into the vehicle body, emphasizing sharpness. The vehicle itself has a simple graphic design to make the knife stand out.

This project was initiated after being selected in a Kai development competition that encourages all employees to participate and aims for manufacturing driven by ideas, unbound by existing manufacturing concepts, techniques, or processes. A "Whetstone Usage Survey" conducted by Kai in February 2021 revealed that approximately half of respondents did not sharpen their knives, and most who did used simple sharpeners. While simple sharpeners are often used for convenience, proper sharpening with a whetstone ensures a longer-lasting edge.
