Sail a yacht and contemplate Edo-period shipbuilding techniques
Kai Anjin, an ocean-view hot spring inn developed by HOSHINO RESORTS that allows guests to enjoy a sailing experience, is offering a "Moment of Craftsmanship" program: a yacht excursion to contemplate Edo-period shipbuilding techniques. Available on Thursdays until May 26, 2022, this experience allows guests to learn about history and sailing ships while enjoying the beautiful Izu landscape.
Actually board a yacht and experience chart reading and rope work
Moments of Craftsmanship connect guests with local artisans, artists, and producers, allowing them to witness rare skills up close and learn about their craft. Since 2021, Kai has offered these Moments of Craftsmanship as part of its "unique hospitality for each region and season."
Kai Anjin, named after the English navigator Ganjin Miura who served Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Edo period, offers the "Yacht Excursion to Contemplate Edo-Period Shipbuilding Techniques."
The plan begins with a short film on the first day of your stay, introducing the history of Western-style sailing ships built in Ito during the Edo period. The next day, you will board a yacht from Ito Port, a five-minute walk from Kai Anjin, accompanied by Jun'o Mori, a first-class navigator who has sailed the world and is knowledgeable about the history of the Ito area and Ganjin Miura.
On the way out, you will learn how to read charts and understand the course, and experience the sensation of hoisting the sails by hand and moving with the wind. As you head offshore, you can observe the changing colors of the sea and the beautiful Izu landscape, a tapestry of sea, town, and mountains.
On the return journey, while learning rope techniques, you will hear anecdotes from Mr. Mori about his global voyages and see the mouth of the Matsukawa River from the sea, where large sailing ships capable of navigating the open ocean were built in the Edo period. This allows you to contemplate Ganjin Miura's shipbuilding techniques.
Kai Anjin features designs themed around the sea and sea travel throughout the property. We invite you to immerse yourself in the romance of the Age of Discovery and connect with the unique history of Ito, alongside the hot springs and exquisite cuisine.
