Edition, developed through a partnership between Ian Schrager, founder of New York's legendary club "Studio 54" and a pioneer of boutique hotels, and Marriott International, has finally arrived in Japan with the opening of Tokyo Edition Toranomon, following locations in New York, London, and Barcelona.
The interior design was handled by architect Kengo Kuma, known for his work on iconic structures such as the National Stadium. The hotel occupies floors 31 to 36 of the 180-meter-tall, 38-story "Tokyo World Gate," offering unobstructed views of Tokyo Tower and the city's premier skyline.
The hotel's communal areas, including restaurants, bars, and entertainment spaces, are inspired by rare gems and materials such as sapphire, jade, and gold. Throughout the space, natural Japanese traditional materials like walnut, oak, glass, and silk are incorporated, reflecting a respect for Japanese culture.
The specialty restaurant "The Jade Room + Garden Terrace," scheduled to open in Spring 2021, will be helmed by Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens, making his Japanese debut. The restaurant "The Blue Room," offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, provides modern and innovative cuisine in a retro-chic ambiance adorned with sapphire and topaz blue. Located in the center of the lobby floor, the "Lobby Bar" offers a diverse custom menu, incorporating Japanese flavors.
The terrace seating at "The Jade Room + Garden Terrace," described as an "aerial garden" and located 140 meters above ground, offers light meals and cocktails. With over 500 plants and trees, including exotic species like the traveler's palm, it invites guests into a beautiful and serene oasis away from the bustling urban daily life.
Despite its name, "Gold Bar at EDITION," scheduled to open in Spring 2021, is an interior space inspired by "Yakisugi," a Japanese technique of charring cedar wood for durability, with subtle white and gold highlights. It transforms from a relaxed lounge offering all-day menus and modern tea services curated by local tea experts during the day, into a sophisticated cocktail bar at night.
All 206 guest rooms, including 22 suites, offer panoramic views of the beautiful Tokyo skyline. In contrast to the restaurants, the guest rooms feature a neutral, "colorless" palette that enhances their clean impression and creates a relaxing space.
Additionally, the hotel features a spa and a gym accessible to guests 24 hours a day. A pool and jacuzzi, bathed in natural light, are also available.
Ian Schrager
"I wanted to create something that is not only embodied by Japanese tradition but is also cutting-edge and avant-garde, just as Tokyo is," says Ian Schrager, who, along with his team, has created the urban resort, Tokyo Edition Toranomon. This marks the birth of a new luxury lifestyle hotel with a unique and distinct identity.
