Two hours by car from central Tokyo lies Kosuge Village in Yamanashi Prefecture, at the source of the Tama River. Facing severe depopulation and an aging population, with its residents now numbering about 700, one-third of its peak, the village led the establishment of EDGE in 2018, a company to create new accommodations to preserve the village's beautiful nature and culture for future generations, initiating the hotel project.
In August 2019, under the concept "A Village of 700 Becomes One Hotel," the distributed hotel "NIPPONIA Kosuge Genryu no Mura," which treats the entire region as a single lodging facility, opened. As its second phase, two traditional houses situated on steep cliffs, characteristic of Kosuge Village's terrain, were renovated. Now, the new guest room units, "Cliff House," have opened.
The "Cliff House" consists of two units: one 70-square-meter unit with a capacity for four adults, and one 40-square-meter unit for two adults. Taking into account the context of the with-corona era, it offers accommodations and tourist experiences that avoid the three Cs, such as in-room check-in and check-out, in-room dining, and open-air activities like agricultural experiences.
Meals consist of freshly caught local fish and just-harvested vegetables, prepared by guests themselves. Using ingredients from the in-house farm, seasonal ingredient sets, and fully equipped kitchens, guests can enjoy authentic local gastronomy with recipes from a village chef who is deeply familiar with local produce.
From the guest rooms, guests can enjoy a unique mountain view, unobstructed by any artificial structures. The scenery, reminiscent of Kaii Higashiyama's masterpiece "Green Echo," allows guests to appreciate the seasonal changes of the mountains.
"NIPPONIA Kosuge Genryu no Mura," where the entire village becomes a hotel, offers a micro-tourism experience that aligns with the with-corona era.
