A Fusion of Traditional Techniques and Contemporary Vision
Bauer is an artist who redefines the potential of natural dyes through a contemporary lens, drawing inspiration from traditional dyeing techniques. She emphasizes sustainability in all stages of her creative process, utilizing natural materials sourced from her native Hawaii.
The works presented in this exhibition were created using plants gathered along the Pali Highway in Nuʻuanu Valley, where the artist resides. The exhibition title "PALI" means "cliff" in Hawaiian, referring to the land itself and symbolizing a feeling of standing on the brink of a decision.
It expresses the internal conflict between the desire to move towards a better self and the feeling of being pulled back to old habits. It is an attempt to embody, through her work, the tension that exists between what one cherishes and what one strives to become.
The exhibition will feature "Prismatic," a suspended fabric sculpture in four panels inspired by the four cardinal directions, a series of handmade bamboo lamps, and handmade paper works created from plant materials.
The natural dyeing technique is an art form that humanity has universally possessed. Its presentation today as "art" is itself proof of how our connection with nature has weakened over time. This exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the fundamental truth, often taken for granted, of the necessity for humans to remain connected to the natural world.
