Sharpen your senses and engage in learning, thinking, and working within a space steeped in history and culture.
Water and Craft, the general incorporated association for western Toyama Prefecture's tourism, has developed a telework space within Jonan Betsuin Zentoku-ji Temple with support from the Cabinet Office and Nanto City, launching it as the "Zentoku-ji Temple TELEWORK PROJECT."
A Space Featuring Toyama's Materials and Traditional Craftsmanship
Jonan Betsuin Zentoku-ji Temple has been central to Johana, known as the "Little Kyoto of Etchu." It is a renowned temple that embodies the spiritual landscape of Toyama, a region called the "Kingdom of Shinshu" for its deep-rooted Buddhist faith. It is also a sacred site for Mingei (folk craft), where Yanagi Sōetsu, the founder of the Mingei movement and a philosopher, stayed for 62 days and wrote "The Way of Beauty," considered the culmination of his Mingei philosophy.
The "Zentoku-ji Temple TELEWORK PROJECT" has now opened a telework space within Jonan Betsuin Zentoku-ji Temple. It offers a work environment in a special, tranquil time and space within a renowned temple that has accumulated 550 years of history.
There are two types of usage plans available: daily and monthly.
In addition to the telework space, it is also possible to arrange experience programs and special training sessions to learn about Buddhist and traditional culture, such as "food experiences" rooted in the region, "interactions with monks," "engaging with crafts and folk art," and "agricultural experiences." This also caters to corporate and university training and retreats.
Touching upon the roots of "Mingei philosophy," which is gaining attention and is said to be in its third boom, and experiencing the lifestyle and traditional culture of Toyama, which lives in harmony with nature, will foster a healthy mindset and motivation for work and study.
The furniture used was custom-made for this project. It utilizes "worm-eaten" (spalted) Mizunara oak (from Toyama Prefecture), which would normally be discarded. Additionally, the desk legs, shaped like plant stems and made with a 3D printer, are crafted from biodegradable resin. The design was handled by Akinori Hamada, an architect from Toyama and a member of teamLab.
In today's world, where information is abundant and we often feel stifled by a sole focus on knowledge consumption, the Zentoku-ji Temple TELEWORK PROJECT allows individuals to learn, think, and work by fully engaging their senses, drawing upon the power of the Nanto region and the interactions with monks and folk crafts.
Why not try working at this historic temple while learning about the virtues of Toyama? You are sure to receive unique inspiration.
