Next Goal: Achieving Flight with Sustainable Fuel
A scale model of an unprecedented new aircraft design has taken to the skies.
In 2019, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding with Delft University of Technology for the development of the "Flying-V," coinciding with KLM's 100th anniversary. As its name suggests, the "Flying-V" features a unique V-shaped design where the passenger cabin, fuel tanks, and cargo hold are integrated into the wings.
This distinctive design, combined with a lighter airframe, is calculated to achieve approximately 20 percent fuel savings compared to current low-fuel-consumption aircraft. The prototype's inaugural test flight took place in August 2020 at a German airbase. The V-shaped aircraft in flight was captured and released on YouTube.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines President and CEO Pieter Elbers revealed that the project's next objective is to achieve flight using sustainable fuel, commenting, "Our commitment to a sustainable society is only possible through collaboration with partner companies and organizations, and by sharing knowledge and achievements."
He further stated, "The 'Flying-V' design embodies KLM's commitment to sustainability under our slogan 'Fly Responsibly.' Innovation is essential for airlines to ensure long-term business continuity."
