Spend a Refreshing Night at Karuizawa Kogen Church, Bathed in the Glow of Lantern Candles

Karuizawa Kogen Church was born in 1921, originating from the "Artistic Free Education Workshop" that attracted many cultural figures such as Hokusai Kitahara and Fujimaro Shimazaki during the Taisho era. The church's spirit of openness to all is still carried on today, drawing many people from all over Japan to its weekly gospel services and seasonal events.

"Summer Candle Night 2019" at Karuizawa Kogen Church continues the tradition of early missionaries illuminating the town with lanterns, and in 2019, it celebrates its 15th anniversary. Countless lantern candles will be lit in the forest in front of the church, allowing all visitors to participate in the fantastical "Forest of Lantern Candles" enveloped in light.

On August 1st (Thursday), and from August 11th (Sunday) to 18th (Sunday), and on August 31st (Saturday), in addition to "Lantern Strolls" through the forest of lanterns, visitors can also participate in the "Summer Night Forest Music Service." A gospel live performance, beginning with a sermon by the pastor and the clear tones of handbells, will be held, offering a moment of prayer, song, and profound peace within the light-filled space.
