The Culmination of KAI Atami's Hospitality. On the Grand Finale,
A Private Cruise to View the Fireworks
Hoshino Resorts KAI Atami, which took over a ryokan founded in 1894 and has hosted numerous guests since 2009, will close its doors after check-out on April 1, 2019 (Monday) for renovations. In conjunction with this, a closing event, "A Thousand Autumns of Plums and Geisha," will be held for two months starting February 1, 2019, as the culmination of KAI Atami's hospitality.
At "A Thousand Autumns of Plums and Geisha," the special course "Culmination's Specialite" will be served at the別館 Villa del Sol, and a strawberry daifuku inspired by geisha will be offered at the Aokai Terrace, a relaxation space after bathing. The "Culmination's Specialite" is a special course featuring abundant seafood in season during spring, selected from the many menus offered by the chef over the past 20 years.
The strawberry daifuku, inspired by geisha, was the most popular confection among the historical sweets offered at Aokai Terrace. It is a custom-made item by an Atami confectioner, where white bean paste and mochi dough are layered to envelop a strawberry, resembling a thumb-sized geisha.
On the staircase connecting to the hot springs in the rooms, a guest-participation art installation, "Ascending Dragon Slope Blooming with Plums," will be held. Each step of the staircase will be adorned with a wave pattern in traditional Shizuoka Suruga-Wazome dyeing. Guests will tie red and white plum blossoms made of Mizuhiki (decorative Japanese cord) to the plum trees and buds depicted on the walls, gradually increasing the plum blossoms and making the area more vibrant each day.
Furthermore, plum blossoms will be arranged in the large communal bath, which draws from "Hashiriyu," one of Japan's three oldest hot springs, allowing guests to enjoy the "Plum Viewing Bath" with Sagami Bay as a borrowed landscape. During the event, a limited-edition "Kai Furoshiki" (wrapping cloth) designed with geisha and plum motifs will be offered as a two-month amenity. Featuring the arrow-feather pattern, also used in KAI Atami's uniforms, along with plum and fan motifs symbolizing geisha, this will be a special accommodation benefit that guests can continue to use at home or on future travels.
The grand finale on Sunday, March 31, after the two-month "A Thousand Autumns of Plums and Geisha" event, will feature a chartered cruise to watch the Atami Kaijo Fireworks. Additionally, the "Banquet of Plums and Geisha" will be held, opening the hotel lobby, courtyard, and main hall for guests to enjoy a final evening with Atami geisha while sipping plum wine. This special banquet will offer a taste of KAI Atami's history and local culture, including the resort's original regional cultural performances "Atami Plum Wine Salon" and "Dance of Atami Geisha," sparkler fireworks in the courtyard, and a special evening opening of the Villa del Sol wine bar.
KAI Atami is scheduled to reopen in three years. Details regarding the renovation content and reopening date will be announced on the official KAI Atami website as they are decided, while preserving the sea breeze, views of Sagami Bay, and Japanese aesthetic felt within the guest rooms.
