Experience Autumn Traditions in Kyoto: Master Noh 'Kata' for Poise, Align Mind and Body with Zen Teachings
HOSHINOYA Kyoto offers an escape into a world of tranquility, surrounded by the beauty of the changing seasons. Here, at this premium resort, the immersive program 'Kirei no Iroha' invites guests to cultivate their aesthetic sensibilities through the practices of Noh and Zen.
Participants will be dressed in a silk kimono suitable for appreciating Noh performances and receive a private Noh lesson on a stage not usually accessible to the public. This stage, the 'Kawamura Noh Stage,' was built in 1957 and is located northwest of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. A Noh actor from the Kanze school will guide participants through the basics of 'kata' (movements) and 'utai' (chanting), along with an explanation of Noh's cultural background. The graceful movements of Noh actors, even in their advanced years, are a testament to their training in 'kata.' This instruction aims to inspire participants to refine their posture and deportment in daily life.
The Zen program takes place at the Rinzai-shu Myoshinji Temple, a major head temple of the Rinzai school, located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. Here, participants will listen to a Zen talk and practice Zazen meditation while admiring the beautiful autumn gardens. Zen teaches the principle of 'Chōshin, Chōsoku, Chōshin'—that by practicing Zazen with correct posture and deep breathing, one can achieve balance in both mind and body.
Throughout the stay, a morning exercise called 'Waterside Deep Breathing,' incorporating breathing techniques, is held daily under the approximately 400-year-old large maple tree in the 'Inner Garden' at HOSHINOYA Kyoto. Away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, this practice of slow breathing and clearing the mind is expected to bring about a sense of mental and physical well-being. Immerse yourself in the autumn scenery along the gently flowing Oi River at HOSHINOYA Kyoto and experience a program designed to enhance your inner and outer beauty.
