The "The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award" is an award established for the first time this year, presented to the most outstanding classic car among the "Best of Show" winners from six concours d'elegance events held in the previous year.
This award was jointly established by members widely known as leading automotive experts and dedicated to preserving classic cars as cultural heritage, including Sir Michael Kadoorie, owner and chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, and Christian Philippsen, known for his authority in classic cars.
The judging was conducted by 24 jurors, including Chris Bangle, Ralph Lauren, and Kiyoyuki Okuyama, who are among the industry's foremost experts, designers, celebrities, and classic car enthusiasts.
The inaugural award winner, announced at a private dinner during Monterey Car Week in Monterey County, California, on August 16, 2016, was the "1937 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop," owned by Peter Mullin, founder of the Mullin Automotive Museum, his wife Merle Mullin, and the Mullin Automotive Museum Foundation.
Jay Leno, the American actor and comedian and one of the judges, commented, "I am deeply moved that Mr. Mullin's car has received this award. The reason for the award is not just the exceptional beauty of the car. All the cars Mr. Mullin has restored perfectly recreate the original intent in terms of historical background and detail. The fact that this dedication makes this car a special existence was the unanimous opinion of all the judges."
