Jun Miyake: The Artist Embodiment of Jazz Hip-Hop

DJ Toshio Matsuura's music program for adults, "TOKYO MOON," airs every Sunday night at 11:30 PM on InterFM 76.1MHz. We introduce "fresh" music carefully selected from around the world, and topics that stimulate the intellectual curiosity of adults. Here, we look back at the content that has just aired. This is a series where you can enjoy "TOKYO MOON" with your eyes and ears, by delving deeper into artists, introducing related songs, and even allowing you to purchase those songs. This week, we focus on composer Jun Miyake, who is about to release his new work, "Lost Memory Theatre Act-1."

A Special Project from Japan!

Since the 1980s, he has been creating music that pierces the blind spots of the era, with a hidden "jazz knife," in various creative scenes such as CM music for major Japanese companies, films, stage plays, and dance.Composer Jun Miyake. His music, featured in Wim Wenders' film "Pina," also garnered international acclaim for its overwhelming presence while playing a supporting role. His music, featured in Wim Wenders' film "Pina," also garnered international acclaim for its overwhelming presence while playing a supporting role.

Trumpeter Terumasa HinoAn encounter with the works of Terumasa Hino led him to study music abroad in the United States alone after graduating from high school. After building his foundation there and returning to Japan, a song from his debut album was used in a commercial featuring Andy Warhol, leading to numerous awards at festivals like the Cannes International Advertising Film Festival, and earning him the nickname "King of Commercials" (with over 3,000 works).

When I was working at "Bohemia," the "dancing jazz club" that opened in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo, in 1987, Miyake was the music director, selecting and booking musicians, and sometimes performing with his own group. Even to a young person like me, the unique musicians he brought in, with their distinct aura different from ordinary jazz, colored the Tokyo night. (Incidentally, it was at this jazz club that I met the two people who would later form U.F.O.).

A quarter of a century has passed since then, and I believe his "knife" has not only remained sharp but has grown even more brilliant. While based in Paris, he continues to embrace his passionate samurai spirit and thrive on the world stage.Jazz Hip-HopJun Miyake, an artist embodying "Jazz Hip-Hop." I will continue to pay attention to his future endeavors.

Finally, we present the artist's own comments on his new work, "Lost Memory Theatre Act-1." This is music that discerning adults should listen to.

"There are memories deeply tied to a specific place. Sometimes, that specific place disappears without warning.
Where do our memories, severed from their links, wander? What if there was a theater where lost memories flowed?
Like the replicants in Blade Runner, craving memories, people gather there, experiencing those memories vicariously. What kind of music would play there? Not the music of the past itself, but what kind of music would evoke lost memories?"
Not the music of the past itself, but what kind of music would evoke lost memories?
What kind of music would evoke lost memories?"Jun Miyake
