EVENT | Ryuichi Sakamoto's Call to Action: 18 Artists Respond
NO NUKES 2012: Two Days to Rethink Our Future Together
On Saturday, July 7th and Sunday, July 8th, 18 musicians who heeded Ryuichi Sakamoto's call to "appeal for a nuclear-free future through the power of music" gathered at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Dubbed "NO NUKES 2012," this music festival will be broadcast live online to the entire world. It's a truly "21st-century festival" that can be enjoyed not only at the venue but also at home or on the go.

It has been nearly a year and four months since the Great East Japan Earthquake brought unprecedented devastation. In stark contrast to the affected regions, which are slowly but surely embarking on the path to recovery, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant still shows no clear sign of reaching a conclusion. The entire world watches its every move with bated breath.
In the wake of the nuclear plant accident, public opinion both domestically and internationally is shifting towards a "nuclear-free" stance. Yet, on July 5th, Unit 3 of the Oi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukui Prefecture resumed operation. Coincidentally, just two days later, on Saturday, July 7th and Sunday, July 8th, the music festival "NO NUKES 2012" will be held under the banner of "appealing for a nuclear-free future through the power of music."
At the venue, Makuhari Messe in Chiba, a total of 18 artists will gather, including YMO, to which initiator Ryuichi Sakamoto belongs, as well as Keigo Oyamada, KRAFTWERK, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Kazuyoshi Saito, Masayoshi Yamazaki, and Tortoise Matsumoto. They will convey their individual thoughts on a "nuclear-free" future through their music.
The "skmtSocial project," initiated by Sakamoto and a group of volunteers, felt it would be a waste to keep these sentiments confined to the venue. They decided to stream the event live online to the entire world. In addition to the live broadcast, there will be segments featuring Sakamoto's talks from a special studio and screenings of lecture videos to impart correct knowledge about nuclear power and radiation, all planned as internet-exclusive content.
All proceeds from "NO NUKES 2012" will be donated to the "10 Million People's Signatures Campaign to Say Goodbye to Nuclear Power Plants," a group leading the anti-nuclear movement. Ahead of the event, Sakamoto stated, "We want these two days to be a time for everyone to think about our future together. We are planning initiatives to connect with people around the world watching the online broadcast, turning it into the next action. We hope you won't just 'watch' the stream, but actively 'participate'." As the situation surrounding nuclear power is at a turning point, this promises to be two days that will resonate deeply with each participant.
